Retirement Visa Query

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

My Retirement Visa expires on 19th July 2016. I intend staying in Thailand for the foreseeable future. My UK passport expires on 23rd July 2017.
If I apply for a new passport in, say, February 2017, can the RV stamp be carried forward/transferred?
When is the best time to renew my passport?

Thanks for any and all useful advice!

I assume you have an extension of stay you applied for at an immigration office. Or do you have a OA visa from a embassy or consulate.

When you get your new passport your current extension stamp will be transferred to your new passport at immigration. They will also do a stamp with info about the visa you used that allowed the entry you have been extending and transfer that entry stamp.

Thanks ubonjoe,

I entered Thailand on a TYPE O, N.I. Visa in April 2015 and converted it at my local immigration office (Jomtien) to an RV in July last year.
You think I can apply for my new UK passport this time next year and take the used and new passport to the local immigration office to have the RV stamp transferred?

Thanks ubonjoe,

You have an "extension of stay based on retirement" (It is not a visa)

When you have the new passport immigration will transfer the detail of the "extension of stay" from the old to the new passport.

You do not have a visa. You an extension of stay based upon retirement you applied for at immigration.

If there is any chance you might want to travel to another country after January 23rd of 2017 you should get your new passport before then. The UK will add up to 9 months that are remaining on your passport to the new one when it is issued. So doing it 9 months early means you will loose no months by getting it then.

Immigration will transfer your stamps to the new passport when you get it.

All points noted, ubonjoe. Thank you so much. As an aside, how far in advance would you recommend applying for a new UK passport (assuming you are in a position to answer that!)?

extension of stay ?????? Visa ????? I find these very confusing . can someone please explain.

I suggest you do it 9 months before it expires since you loose noting that way.

Personally I would get the new passport shortly before the extension expires this year to save making an extra trip to immigration. You would only loose a little over 3 months doing it that way.

Thanks so much ubonjoe. Very much appreciated.

Quite simple.

A Visa is obtained from a Thai Embassy.

An extension of stay is obtained at Immigration in Thailand.
