PATTAYA: -- On Sunday afternoon, Nongprue Police announced the arrest of a former Pattaya Police Volunteer who is accused of impersonating a Police Officer and attempting to extort cash from a 20-year-old woman, he detained at an ATM.

Khun Jenjirar was using the ATM in Soi Kaotalo on Friday Night and was approached by Khun Santawoot aged 33, who claimed to be a Police Officer who suspected she was involved in the sale of drugs. She was asked to accompany him to a safe-house nearby for investigation.

She complied and was taken to a house in nearby Soi Nongabok where she was told to call someone who could send him 20,000 Baht in exchange for her release. She was able to somehow escape and reported the incident to Police who were able to arrest the suspect at his house in Soi Nongabok on Sunday.

Sad to say, being taken by enforcement authorities to a secret facility for interrogation seems to be the normal expectation by Thais.

Until people like Jenjirar insist on transparency of police investigations and resist covert (regardless of whether they are real or fake) interrogations, Thai human rights will continue to be abused.
