PHUKET: -- Local officials will splurge more than B42 million on beautification projects to improve the aesthetics of Phuket’s Victory Park near Baan Riang in Thepkrasattri, which commemorates the island’s victory over Burmese marauders in 1785.

The site currently remains a bare field except for an expansive plinth and nine bronze statues of the Phuket Heroines, sisters Thao Thepkrasattri and Thao Srisoonthorn, and seven fellow defenders costing B26 million.

The landscaping will begin in May, confirmed Watcharin Patomwatthanapong, Chief Administrative Officer of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (PPAO).

“We have a budget of budget B42 million to improve the landscaping at the entrance and elsewhere at the 10 rai park,” he said.

“The plans have already been drawn up and include new gardens, a healthy zone for exercise, new toilet blocks and a water-pump station to help clear any floodwaters,” he added.

Koraticha Wattanapan, of the Thao Thepkrasattri Thao Srisoonthorn Foundation (click here), confirmed that a further B300,000 will be spent on installing two new altars on which to place offerings when making merit to honour the two Heroines and their fellow defenders represented on the tableau: Phraya Thongpoon Na Thalang, Prang, Jui, Phraya Tian Prateep Na Thalang, Thongpeang, Neam and Thong.

Unbelievable these huge budgets for fluff projects. How about building more public facilities at the beaches, installing cctv cameras that actually work etc. Oops, not as much money in real projects where you have to be semi accountable.

These projects are really important to the Thai people, who love to go to places like this.

300,000 for a couple of altars sounds a bit expensive although I am all for having decent public parks which will hopefully encourage the public to actually use them.

The funny part is that it will be Burmese workers working there! gigglem.gif

Even funnier is the little known fact that those two heroines were Muslim .. Not a lot of people Thais know that - apologies to Michael Cain.

Massive footpath 'beautification' in Phuket town at the moment.

Noticed some fundamental issues.

1. Completed footpaths, beautified, used as half off/on road parking.

2. Walking's for peasants.

3. Can't walk on beautified footpath's because cars and bikes are parked on them.

4. Police ignore this traffic infringement as they don't have enough chains with padlocks.

5. Attentive motorist alternate parking from left to right side of the road on alternate weekdays.

6. Did I mention walking's for peasants?
