Forest trail in Chonburi

Length : 25 cms (Oh yes, scary)

Tail not in shot was the same dull brown colour

Note 'fat' body compared to head size and length.

Froze in position on trail/forest floor

Any ideas?

I find it a bit silly that we have to resort to a farang forum to identify snakes in Thailand. I ask the missus - what is this snake and is it poisonous? She invariably responds with "It is bad, I don't know what kind it is".

Normally wherever I lived I learned to identify the local snakes to I could differentiate between a garter snake, rat snake, water moccasin or rattle snake. It seems in Thailand they are just generally afraid of all and never bother to determine if they are poisonous or not. I don't really get that. "Good snakes" (read non-poisonous) are good to have in your garden to keep the vermin away....

I live in the sticks (sort of). On occasion I see the odd snake, probably about 4 or 5 a year.....it has never crossed my mind to wonder ...what "make is this fella"....couldn't care less, I just admire them and let hem meander along their merry way (not like one post I'll never forget on here, how hubby spotted a snake on his wall and boastfully told us how his dear wife came out and bludgeoned it to death). If I was told what "breed" it was I would probably forget it in a few days anyway. That's just me of course,...different horses for for different courses.

I live in the Delta region of Vietnam, and the Rule of my house is - Don't kill a snake, regardless of what it is........because the general answer to "What is this snake called" "I dumno, but its bad" or "I dunno, but taste good" the markets are a smorgasbord, every snake imaginable is for sale. and they wonder why the rats are eating all the rice................wai2.gif

In the states I could easily identify whether poisonous or not. Poisonous - die. Here, I cannot. I have learned that the cobra comes in many different color variations and does not have the viper head so easily identified. I had a spitting cobra on my back wall. It was ready to strike but must have been out of spitting venom because when I came out the back door it was eyeball to eyeball. I finally managed to find something long enough to give it a shove and gave it to the neighbors constantly yipping poodle mutts. Blissful silence for 2 days, but unfortunately it didn't kill them. I take the safe route, if it is in my property, kill 'em all and let god sort 'em out. Oh, rattlesnake is pretty good fried, never liked it stewed. Some of the Thai snake I've eaten was pretty good. Cottonmouth was the worst I've seen, aggressive as hell, it would come after you.
