In a Facebook post Saturday, Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith reminded vehicle owners across Cambodia that, in accordance with the new traffic law, being caught using illegal license plate numbers can carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Mr. Kanharith used the widespread abuse of unofficial press plates as one example of how the law is commonly broken.

“Be informed to those who love press plate numbers, if the police catch you, you would not be penalized with a fine, but in prison,” the minister’s Facebook post read.

Information Ministry spokesman Ong Kim Seng said the Ministry of Information has never and does not have the rights to issue vehicle plate numbers, and that the use of a press plate – denoting that the driver of the plate’s vehicle is with the media – is illegal. Some users of the plates, Mr. Seng said, are journalists while others are ordinary citizens.
