NLA passes additional expenditure bill to implement public projects

BANGKOK: -- The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) yesterday passed a 56 billion baht additional expenditure bill in a nonstop session for the government’s urgent need for spending on critically needed public projects.

An emergency meeting was called by the NLA to give approval to a budget increase for the 2016 budget.

A sum not exceeding 56 billion baht was proposed and the NLA passed the bill in three consecutive readings.

This was due to the urgent need for funds under the government’s national reform master-plan to address 37 critical national issues. This master-plan had earlier been approved by the NLA and was then handed over to the National Reform Steering Assembly to oversee.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, revealed later that the budget increase was proposed after it was realized that state coffers had received a substantial influx from the recent wavelength auction organized by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission.

Mr. Somkid was also able to reveal that the amount will be divided into 2 portions, the first of which will go to priority government projects while the remainder will be used to replenish the Treasury Department’s accounts.
