The letter issued by the school today (Feb 19).

PHUKET: -- The Phuket School that on Tuesday (Feb 16) issued a letter on an alleged attempted child abduction in front of the school by a man driving a white van have today (Feb 19) issued a new letter explaining that the warning they initially issued is all a fictional story from a student.

Pol Col Peerayut Karajedee, Deputy Commander of Phuket Police told The Phuket News today that they contacted the school and informed them of their investigation about the alleged abduction, and that the whole thing turned out to be from one student who made it all up and told her parent about it.

Winai Suriyaprakan, Director of Plookpanya Municipal School issued a letter soon after telling parents that police had confirmed that a student made up the child abduction story and told her parent about it. The frightened parent posted a message onto her Facebook to warn others without checking into the story first.

The problem in this place, where people can't really trust the police nor any other authorities, to be servants of the society and not to be servants for them selves, or the folks who direct them, is that real trust of authorities is nowhere to be found.

Therefore the initial report could have been as real as the corrected report above.

Go figure, what is the real truth and what is simply fabricated and compensated explanations to serve the 'common good'.

Right on, case closed. Parents, your kids are safe and there is nothing to be worried about.

...

Most likely there is nothing to be worried about. Most likely the case got solved, one way or another. Most likely kids are as safe as they have always been.

Or maybe they found out the attempted abductor was related to an influencial person and after a payment was made, this excuse justified closing any further investigation.

It is difficult to believe that a fabricated story went this far but then again, we have to remember this is la la land.

As you state, when authorities cannot be trusted, it is often hard to determine fact from fiction.

What's that story about a wolf and a boy that cries again?

Don't know that wolf story. The one story I know.

You have a gun with one bullet. There is a wolf and a Lawyer standing in front of you. Who do you shoot ?

The wolf is now my best friend.

"The problem in this place" is when a crime occurs that is likely to effect tourism, it is "spun" as a "misunderstanding" or similar, or there are early arrests, possibly not of the actual offender, where "confessions" are then extracted, to calm the fears of tourists.

It also goes to the lack of professional policing here, especially considering many "buy" their transfer to Phuket. This ensures Phuket gets the most corrupt, not the most dedicated or professional police.

So, yes, on many occasions, the general public, and tourists from all around the world, do not know where the truth lays here.

For all we know, the big Thai policeman in his scary uniform, interviewed the child and put words in her mouth to make this go away.

Policeman: "So, the white van drove past you, but the driver didn't stop and try to drag you into the van, did he?"

Girl: "No Mr. Policeman."

Policeman: "Ok, good girl."

Case closed.

Press statement released, children on Phuket are safe again.

What now?

"What now?" - police inform parents that if they report an attempted abduction, and it is a false report, charges will be laid.

The result is, no more reports of attempted abductions, because, "Why take the risk dealing with a corrupt police department?"

Reports will then stop, and Phuket no longer has any child abductors driving around looking for targets, which makes Phuket look safe.

"Reported crime" goes down, therefore crime has gone down, which makes it look like police are doing a good job.

Regardless of the whether this story is true or a fabrication, incidents such as this should be reported just in case. If it makes just a few parents and teachers pause for thought and be a little more vigilant watching over the children in their care, then that's a good thing surely.

Perhaps this case has raised awareness that undesirables exist in society.
