BANGKOK, 21 February 2016 (NNT) - Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas has paid a courtesy call on Thailand’s prime minister, Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, during his official visit to the Kingdom of Thailand.

PM Gen Prayut received the visiting Palestinian president at the Government House. Gen Prayut said he was glad and was looking forward to this visit which is the first high level visit between the two sides.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Palestine in 2012, their relations have always been strong.

President Mahmud Abbas said Palestine wished to further cooperation with Thailand in various aspects namely politics and trade and investment. He also thanked the Thai side for helping to improve Palestine’s tourism and economy as Thailand is currently working with Japan on the Palestinian development.

In reply, Gen Prayut said Thailand was more than willing to assist Palestine in terms of human resources, tourism, sports, agriculture, public health, and skilled labor.

Gen Prayut also voiced his support for Palestine to reach a peace agreement with Israel based on the two-state solution approach.

Abbas enjoys "popularity" among his own people at very low levels.

But if you're going to meet with a Palestinian leader, he's the one for now.

probably because of this " Although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly charged Abbas with inciting the violence, Israeli security experts have said they believe Abbas and the Palestinian Authority (PA) are working to discourage attacks and prevent another intifada. Since the end of the Second Intifada, Abbas, 80, has called upon the Palestinians to reject armed struggle and mount a campaign of nonviolent resistance to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, a message many Palestinians seem to reject." I haven't heard Netanyahu saying he will stop the settlements that are the main cause of this hate!

Wonder if the ole boy motored down to soi 3 for some shawarma and a shisha along with al jazeera on the telly.

I wonder how many tourists holding Palestinian Authority passports that Thailand gets every year.
Probably not many as they have to go to Jordan to get the visa. Cambodia (entry$20). Laos and Malaysia are visa free though!

It's true that he currently enjoys low levels of popularity. One of the main reason is that he never obtained anything significant from Israel by his mainly peaceful and collaborative attitude. Paradoxally, the Hamas obtained more from Israel than Abbas did.

Right. It's the settlements that make the surrounding countries want to wipe Israel off the map. That would include the settlement that established the state of Israel. I really don't understand why the Jews didn't accept the generous offers from other countries of land where they could establish a place of refuge for themselves after the holocaust. Oh wait - there were none. And really, the Jews could just vacate the state of Israel and move to other countries since there's so little anti-Semitism around the world now.

if Israel had stuck to the Land that THEY agreed to rather than stealing and continuing to steal further land from the Palestinians then perhaps there would not be so much hatred to fuel! The Jews were a minority in Palestine at the inception of the State of Israel!

Gen Prayut also voiced his support for Palestine to reach a peace agreement with Israel based on the two-state solution approach.

But not the approach that Prayut will allow for the Muslims in South Thailand in order to achieve peace!

Pure hipocrisy and dishonesty.

Thailand has diplomatic relations with both the State of Israel and the non-existent state of Palestine. Therefore, a meeting like this is normal.

Non-existent for you but recognized by 136 nations of 193.
And the list is growing every year.
So the PM Prayut is perfectly right to prepare for the future by building friendly state links with occupied Palestine.

If you knew the History in the South you would have not written this, so please go back to the books and/or wikipedia

Yeah they achieved death and destruction of its own people. It also achieved filtering off millions of aid dollars to make Ashes Mashal a millionaire. They have managed to incite teenagers to stab Israeli citizens going about their own business. They achieved fantastic coverage when they slaughtered an Israeli mum of four (plus two adopted kids) in front of her children when they invaded her home. You must be well chuffed.

Gosh yes! They have all of Africa recognising them and the Arab world and the ex communist bloc but very few democratic countries because to support Palestine is to support corrupt to the hilt murders, conmen and terrorists. Such recognition by the UN is why it has become irrelevant and degraded.
