As many as 60,000 Cambodian deportees from Thailand are expected to cross back into Cambodia this year, according to Samaritan’s Purse, an international NGO that works with deportees and migrants along the border with Thailand.

Some return on foot, others by bus – nearly all are empty-handed, staff at the NGO say. “The migrants are just dropped off on the border and have nowhere to go. A lot of times they have nothing,” explained Lauren Cook, a communications intern at Samaritan’s Purse. “If we see they have visible signs of trauma we refer them to an aftercare agency,” she added.

The number of deportees expected this year is higher than last year, when 55,626 Cambodians were deported from Thailand for illegally crossing the border in search of work. Most are dropped off at Poipet, where Samaritan’s Purse has opened an office to work with the Migrant Assistance Center and the Poipet Municipal Authority to offer immediate assistance and help migrants return to their families.
