Non Im O (marriage) from Savannakhet; visa run to Mae Sai

Featured Replies

Hi all, I am planning to do a visa run Sunday to Mae Sai/Tachilek. I have a non-Im O based on marriage that I got in Savannakhet. So far I've done visa runs by air to KL and Hong Kong but this time I'll do the land crossing at Mae Sai and I just want to make sure they'll let me do that without a re-entry permit. I ask because I read an old post saying Mae Sai wants re-entry permits now for Non-Im Os. Also, the border is open every day, right?

You don't need a re-entry permit to use for entry to the country if you have a valid visa to use. No problem to do the crossing since you have one.

The are open 7 days a week.

If you have a valid multiple entry visa a re-entry permit is not required.

Do you need to exit before apply a new marriage visa?

If you want a "visa" then you will have exit and apply for a Visa at a Thai Embassy/Consulate.

why not just renew the marriage visa at the emigration office if he already in Thailand?

A visa cannot be renewed at immigration.

A new extension of stay can be applied for if a person is on one already or can be applied for during the last 30 days of a 90 day non-o visa entry.

So, Joe, with a valid Non Imm O then, at the 90 day point, you can go to Immigration and get another 90 days?

I have a friend who has one (and one of those ASEAN cards???) and he always does a Cambodia run, which obviously costs money.

Could he just go to Immigration then?

A non-o visa based upon marriage or for being the parent of a That can be extended once per entry for 60 days to visit them. And for one year with financial proof and all the required documents.

No.

If your friend has a multiple-entry visa or an APEC card it is necessary to leave the Country. Immigration can be of no assistance.

Thank you Gentlemen, so he's not wasting his money then, but I did wonder.

What advantage do those APEC (thanks for the reminder) cards provide?

Not much in practical terms then, or am I missing something?

Maybe visa free entry to many countries is seen as a practical advantage ?

It allows unlimited 90 day entries to Thailand for the 3 years it is valid which I think could be an advantage for many people.

The advantage of going to Savannakhet to get the non-Im O based on marriage is that they don't require you to have seasoned 400,000 baht in a bank, nor do they require your wife to be present when you apply. The downside is that you have to do visa runs. To my knowledge, Savannakhet is the only place that will do this. If you're interested, there are a few threads about it. Hope this helps.

I had heard (not from a great source mind you) that Mae Sai weren't allowing even Non-O visa runs now (with multi-entry). This would surprise me but it would be good to hear how your trip went. Did you have any issues?

You heard wrong. If you have a valid visa for re-entry you can do the crossing. No visa no crossing is how it is.

Ubon Joe is right. I had no issues at all. I got to Immigration at just before 7pm and had no intention of going to Tachilek (been there done that), which is a good thing because I think they told me that it was too late to go there anyway, but don't quote me on that because my Thai is very basic; I'm just guessing what they said. I went late because I like to drive up and take my time wandering around Mae Sai rather than hurry back to Chiang Mai driving in the dark.
