Not my take, but I respect your viewpoint. I think she mostly did 'give a toss'--but not every waking minute of every day of the 19 years of her show. So, cancel her. Also not buying Markle being a horrible tyrant, either. I think both are victims of some 'underlings', frankly, not really knowing their place in the workplace hierarchy--and seizing on, and likely blowing up, a few instances of perhaps poor behavior to 'get at' the boss. I do wonder if reprimanding an employee is now considered poor behavior by a boss, who is not being 'kind' and 'loving'. Maybe only if they are female and named Markle. Or, a certain magazine editor wearing Prada. We're seeing the same thing with Harris--some stories of staff turnover. She must be the dreaded 'difficult to work with'. Can't have that, at least not in a woman. Note: If an 'underling is reduced to tears', likely they are the wrong person for a demanding, high-pressure job and should look for something more suitable to their delicate temperament. Perhaps teaching flower arranging. These days, with social media so pervasive, a few negative stories, true or not, can easily leave a false, unfair impression. I think that is mostly the case with both women, with some envy and jealousy thrown in for good measure. I re-read some of the Ellen workplace stories and found myself thinking, what's the big deal. Pretty thin, watery gruel to feast on considering 19 years of workplace behavior involving hundreds of workers to dissect and find fault with. The sole possibly serious charge I noticed involved alleged sexual harassment or other questionable behavior by three male producers, who were fired. People are human, they aren't perfect. If a celebrity chooses to use their public position to try to both promote and to try to be kind, compassionate, etc., I don't think it's hypocrisy if they aren't always successful in practicing what they preach. And, it is certainly not hypocrisy, in my book, to believe and promote love, joy, etc., as important things to strive for in general, but also be focused, in the workplace as a boss running a business, on other important things--like keeping the business afloat. Ellen did that for 19 years, keeping her show at or near the top of the ratings, not an easy thing by any means. And, at the same time, keeping her workers employed, including, it seems, some rather resentful, ungrateful ones. -

Father died at age of 81 from multiple issues - had had a minor stroke, had pulmonary failure and maybe vascular dementia. But outlived his 2 brothers. Spent most of last 2 years sitting in his chair, sleeping. Mother died mainly of old age - spent over 12 years in a nursing home, had dementia and lots of minor issues, just slowly lost the battle, age 93. Still have one Aunt left, about 90, severe vascular dementia. No one in my generation died yet (13 of us, between 80 and 60). -

My personal experience is very different from what I have read at the start of this thread. I had been Thai resident for many years and my UK State Pension was frozen as of the date I left the UK in 2004. In 2018 I returned to the UK, purchased a flat and set about making myself UK resident once again. It took about three months and required support of my MP and also a letter to the Secretary of State, Amber Rudd. My intention at the time was to spend 6 months in the UK and 6 months in Thailand but to be UK resident for all purposes. After 3 months I received a letter from DWP confirming that I was once again UK resident and that my UK State Pension would be permanently uprated, the letter is copied below but is redacted to protect personal information. After a further two months I left the UK and returned to Thailand, the colder weather was starting to wear me down. The following year I returned to the flat and spent two months there with my wife on holiday, before we returned to Thailand. We were ticketed to return in the Spring of 2020 but Covid intervened and our flight was cancelled.....we have not returned since and the flat has remained tenanted, Per the letter below: I am very comfortable that my permanent and settled lifestyle is that I travel frequently and spend time in different countries but always return to live on the UK, often after a period of many years away. I am also very comfortable that the next time I return to the UK I will once again claim settled UK residency and my pension will be permanently uprated. The letter follows: I am responding to the email dated 1 April 2019 to which included the Rt. Hon Amber Rudd MP about your UK residency status. I should explain that due to the Secretary of State’s wide ranging responsibilities, it is not always possible for her to respond to every letter personally. In this instance I have been asked to reply. I was sorry to read of your concerns and on receipt of your email I arrange for your UK residency status to be investigated. I can confirm the International Group (IG) does not undertake Statutory Residence Tests (SRT). However, they did write to you on 20 December 2018 asking some questions about your residential status in the UK and abroad, this was to establish whether you are a habitually resident in the UK.
