ko.jpg

BANGKOK:-- A South Korean, 41, has died after reportedly jumping from the car park of a Bangkok condo while he was in police custody police.

Pol. Maj. Parat Thongdonnoi told reporters that police had stopped the man at Major Ratchayothin Complex and asked to see his passport. The man told police he kept his passport at his condo located in the Chatuchak area of Bangkok.

Police then escorted the man back to the condo building to check for his passport.

As officers and the man walked through the car park of the condominium located on the 4th floor, he asked officers if he could go to the toilet.

The man is then said to have walked up to the barrier around the perimeter of the car park and jumped, falling to his death.

A search of the man’s room by police and Korean embassy officials later found an expired passport and driving license.

Police say they are continuing to investigate the incident and are working closely with officials from the Korean embassy.

Do you realise, that right this second, right now somewhere around the world some guy is getting ready to kill himself. Isn't that great? Statistics show that every year a million people commit suicide. Thats 2800 a day. That's one every thirty seconds. There goes another guy! And I say guy because men are four times more likely than women to commit suicide, even though women attempt it more. So men are better at it. That's something else you gals oughta be working on. Well if you wanna be truly equal you're gonna have to start taking your lifes in greater numbers. whistling.gif

Are you saying that you were stopped and searched 5 times in one week ?

I have been going to Bangkok frequently for 15 years now and I have never been stopped and searched.

Searched 5 times a week and no longer in Thailand. With a user name like "Shirtless" I have my suspicions. Statistically speaking being searched 5 times goes beyond being just plain "unlucky falang".

More than likely he was somewhere he shouldn't have been or just the wrong place at the wrong time.

6 years in Thailand and I have never been asked to see my passport.

This guy never tells the truth. He is a Thai hater. Good for the rest of us that he is gone. Please don't come back. Please cancel Thai Visa.

Been here for 4 years. I go out almost every night. Often bar areas if friends are here on hole day. NEVER been asked for my passport. Actually was once ....travelling from airport to hua hin after midnight when martial law rules were in. Big deal

Whats the big deal about showing the passport?,we are allowed to show a copy, or ,if i am not mistaken we can just show our drivers licence.I personally dont find it a big deal, takes maybe a minute, and finished,so whats the big deal?Ok some policemen do tend to go a bit further,so if they want to make themselves feel big,so what, just show it and be on your way.We are visitors regardless how long we have lived here, and the rules are there for everyone. My opinion when someone has a passport that needs to be renewed, get it done, its for our own benefit, and saves all that bother later, ducking and diving for nothing only agro to oneself.

Same here. I have passed and stood alone close to small groups of BKK police and still have never been searched. Maybe it is a certain ethnic group they are more interested in. Just trying to understand the reason for this selective stop and and search. I have very pale skin and fair hair so does that mean I am harmless and look honest? I am not implying anything, these are just questions of which the answers could explain what is going on here.

how you look, they way you behave and where you are may well contribute to the chances you will be stopped by the police and asked to show your passport. being a good, well behaved boy i have managed 16+ years here and never been asked to show my passport biggrin.png

Perhaps the South Korean was once a North Korean. Expired South Korean passport might not have been authentic or belonged to the deceased.

And Thailand has a history of returning North Koreans to North Korea.

Better Dead than Red?

Been living in Bangkok for close to 30 years, I have not been asked for my passport even once other than during night club raids, same goes for my friends who we use to go drinking and clubbing back in the day. Although back in the day, night club raids were very common to check for drugs, its uncommon nowadays. My group of friends are pretty diverse, americans / europeans / russions / indians / thais etc

I would say police have a good eye at picking on whoever looks and acts suspicious. That is not to say there are innocent folks who gets checked on the streets.

I've had to show my passport to the Russian police during my holiday there once while walking on the streets. Didn't think too much about it and was just a quick check.

7 years living in Bangkok, only been stopped once and that was coming out of a known drug spot at 1am. A quick check of my wallet, cigarette pack and pockets and I was free to go. They didn't ask for ID (and I wasn't carrying any).

I can't imagine where you were or what you looked like to get stopped 5 times in one week!

The police in Hong Kong do random stop and ID checks. It is a good thing as it does catch criminals. If you are not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about.
