hi all!

i am wondering if it is possible to change a non immigrant B visa into an ED visa, without leaving thailand? i would then go to the immigration office in chaengwatthana. what do you think?

(background: i did an internship and just started a new one. on the non immigrant b visa it says the name of the old company. as i won't need a work permit, an ed visa would be much less complicated, i think...)

thank you in advance for all advice!

You cannot change non immigrant visa classes. The only way to do that is to go out for a new visa.

There is no extension possible for a internship which you could possibley apply for with the non-b visa.

All you can get would be a single entry non-ed visa at a nearby consulate.

Unless the internship is linked with a Thai university who are willing to provide the necessary paperwork it will not be possible to obtain an Ed visa.

Unless the internship is associated with a genuine course of higher education then a work permit is needed.

hi,

thanks for your quick reply!

i wouldn't mind getting a new visa - could i still do it then at the immigration office? or do i really need to get out of thailand to apply at the closest consulate? can't they just replace one for another?

it is still possible to apply for a re-entry for the ed visa, right?

thanks again guys, you're a great help!

Please try re reading the replies .

Visas such as you are asking for are only obtainable from Thai Embassy's/Consulates not from immigration.

Re entry permits can be obtained for any type of entry.

You cannot get a visa at an immigration office. You can only get one at an embassy or consulate.

A re-entry permit would only be valid for the 90 day entry you would get from the visa.

Is your non-b visa a single or multiple entry visa.

the non immigrant b visa i have is multiple entry.

You should keep that visa. The company name that is on it should not matter.

Then use your visa until it expires. It will be difficult to obtain another multiple entry visa within the region, especially if you do not have a work permit.

the problem is that the non immigrant b is valid until end of march, and i will do the internship until end of may...

for extension i'll need a confirmation of the company (for which i don't work anymore) as well as a work permit.

If the enter before date on your visa is at the end of March you can leave and re-enter the country on or before that date and get a new 90 day entry.

Unless the company you are working with is willing to pay you a salary (50K baht) and get you a work permit you would not be able to get an extension.

ok, that's actually a good idea. do i get you right: i will keep the visa until end of march, then go out of thailand and apply at a close consulate for a new visa (ed or non immigrant b again)?

thank you so much for your help!!

Out of curiosity @ubonjoe, there is a TM 86 for change of visas. That should also work for B to ED as it does for Tourist to O.

That is to apply for the a non immigrant visa when you have a tourist visa. If you already have an non immigrant visa you cannot sappy for another one.

Sorry but I get the impression you are having difficulty understand what is being said ------------------did you understand what ubonjoe just wrote about exiting/entering the country just before your visa expires

You will not be able to obtain an Ed or a "B" visa without supporting documentation from your school/university (Ed visa) or your employer ( "B" visa)

Edit

spelling !

...and i have the confirmation of the international organization which i work for.

still it is not very clear to me for which visa i should apply when my current visa is no longer valid.

That is not what I meant. Look at your visa and see what the enter before date is on it. On or prior to that date you can leave and re-enter the country to get new 90 day entry.
