ISTANBUL, TURKEY -- Police in Istanbul have come under attack, apparently from two women. According to Turkish media they have both since been killed.

As a police bus arrived outside a police station in Istanbul’s Bayrampaşa district, the women appeared and were seen to open fire.

Reports say at least one hand grenade was also thrown.

The women then retreated into an apartment block after running through nearby alleys.

Police closed off streets and launched an operation to apprehend the attackers.

A siege situation ensued, with the women trapped inside the building.

Gunfire and an explosion were heard. Reports now say the militants were killed by police.

There were no other reported casualties and no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
