Marrying a Thai citizen - how does it work?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I was in Thailand about a month ago and while I was there I met this girl.

Anyway, we're sort of dating now and I want to move there, unfortunately I couldn't find a legit job that offers work visas.

I'm still considering studying there but we're also considering marriage, she's willing to marry me so I can stay there (I'm not sure how it works in thailand but in most countries when you get married you get permanent residency which allows you to work), so my question is really how complicated is the process? I mean if we get married, will we have to provide a proof that we've known each other for a long period of time or anything like that? We are planning on moving in together as soon as I'm coming back but we only met on January this year.

Thanks.

you do not get permanent residency in most countries around the world and the same is for Thailand, if you want PR then you must pay taxes and have a Work Permit and Visa extension for 3 consecutive years.

If you get married here you can apply for an extension of stay based on being married to a Thai, you will need proof of 40,000THB per month or an account in your name only with 400,000THB in it.

How many people/friends do you know who have married within 2+months of meeting one another ?

As said do not marry for a visa.

Be aware that being married will not improve your job prospects.

You will not secure PR without working and paying taxes for a number of years and even then the process is long, involved and very expensive.

Actually getting legally married in Thailand is easy , staying married , without a job and with few prospects will be hard !

There's so much that can be said in reply to your OP.... And many reading this will be shaking there head...All I would say is rush forward slowly !! Dating and eventually marrying a Thai girl can be a minefield and can be a success but equally can be disastrous .

Take your time, get to know her better, her family her friends before you decide to uproot and put your eggs all in one basket...Good luck !! How and where did you meet her ? How good is her English ?? Where does she work etc..all answers you need to know and feel 100% happy about..as I said good luck but forget the PR issue for now...getting married won't help in the short term...

Several off topic and inflammatory posts have been removed. This is a visa forum not a marital advice forum.

Getting married is cheap and easy.

As said it wont help you that much.

What you will be able to do is get a Multi Entry Non Imm O Visa that lasts a year but means you leaving the country every 90 days.

Or if you have 400,000 Baht in the bank or 40,000 monthly income you can get 12 month permissions to stay in Thailand.

This requires you reporting to Immigration every 90 days.

Simply marrying a Thai does not give you the right to work in Thailand without a Work Permit (even a Permanent Resident here still needs a Work Permit).

OP your asking 3 questions in one.

1. The marriage procedure.

2. Working in Thailand.

3. Visa types.

Maybe your topic should be moved to the General forum, rather than the Visa forum to allow broader answers to your questions.

Certainly not the general forum. He would end up with page after page of nonsense.

For info on getting married he would want to post on the marriage and divorce forum.

I think he has already got his question about permanent residency answered.

You also have to remember most jobs in Thailand A farang is not allowed to have. There is so much again' you, your swimming up stream.
