Day visit to Vientiane.

Featured Replies

I come to Thailand several times a year but never stay for more than three weeks, so never need to do a border run. But I'm wanting to do a day trip to Vientiane. Always skipped the forum topics on in out crossings so am unsure of the changes to doing this. Can anyone tell me if I can do this or has it been stopped. I do realize I could get a visa from embassy but just wanting a easy day visit.

Thanks in advance.

I assume you are staying on a visa exempt (30 day stamp at entering Thailand)?

(no long history of recent entries)

Except you are keen on traveling to Vientiane. you could extend your stay once for 30 days at the next immigration office (cost 1900 Baht).

This has been introduced a while ago (was it in 2015 or 2014?).

Otherwise there is no problem with doing a border run to V.

Thread should be moved to visa subforum for more response.

Just reread that you come several times a year which I had overlooked.

Do you travel to Thailand by air?

No problem to do the crossing and return. If looking for a visa exempt entry you will only get 15 days unless you are from a G7 country that would allow 30 days,

You will need to pay for a Laos visa, even for a day trip. Depending on nationality, this usually costs about US$30-40 if paying in dollars, a it more otherwise.

Day trip to Vientiane. You must have your reasons. Could not think of anything worse.

Thanks guys. Yes travel by air always. Don't need a visa extension. Just going to be in the area and thought it worth a visit. A been there done that cross off bucket list type of things.

Thanks again.

I did a day trip to Vientiane two years ago. I got a tuk tuk from Nong Khai, stopped at a travel agents to complete a form for the crossing, then queued to hand in the form and 1500 baht - it would have been cheaper in US dollars- at Laos immigration. Then waited a while for my passport to emerge from the immigration window. I hit the morning rush so all that took a while. Maybe it's quieter earlier. While waiting I was approached by a Laos taxi driver and agreed a very reasonable fee for 4 hours or so to visit the main sights of Vientiane. Despite the wait and the visa money I thought it was well worth doing.

just got back from vientiane quite expensive busy place nice temples go early morning for border crossing its nothing special thats my opinion anyway

Thanks. After talking to a few others on the ground and the replies here I think I might give it a miss. Does not sound like it is worth the effort.
