March 7, 201610 yr I have just been informed that Assist Thai Visa offers a UK passport renewal service B5,000. I will use this come my next renewal. john
March 7, 201610 yr That is money for old rope. It's easy to do yourself. It might actually be good value. DIY involves two return journeys to Bangkok.
March 7, 201610 yr Know a couple people who have done this with Assist. Good service if can't / don't want to do the journey to Bangkok. Like any visa service each to their own but much cheaper than a night in Bangkok.

Good grief and I thought I lived in a third world country. Having looked at it, I wonder why they make it so difficult. Here in the sandpit you just post it all off to the UK and they courier the passports back to you. If it's for security reasons, I find it strange that they consider Thailand a bigger risk than the sandpit tbh.
March 7, 201610 yr And why wouldn't you want to go to Bangkok for two trips? That's two two night passes out the wife can do nothing about!
March 7, 201610 yr I have no complaints about them providing this service as I can see how it would be useful but ..... I'm curious to know how they can do it but British citizens can't!!
March 7, 201610 yr That is money for old rope. It's easy to do yourself. Are you kidding? Not if you live in Chiang Mai it isn`t. This involves downloading and filling in the forms with photos, 2 trips to Bangkok, one to take all the crap and apply for the passport and another trip to collect the passport later on. Considering the fares for two return trips, may be some people are not sure which forms are required and how to fill them in, staying at a hotel over night for both trips and the inconvenience. 5000 baht to have it all done seems like a bargain to me. It is possible to use a third party to do the business for you, but it still involves a lot of work and costs.

They probably have contacts in Bangkok, send the passport applications by EMS or similar to their contacts, the contacts do the business at Trendy House, and then post the passports back to Chiang Mai. In fact any one could run such a business but on the other hand only a privileged few are allowed the opportunity.
March 8, 201610 yr Good luck to anyone who sees a business opportunity and can make some money on the way.

March 8, 201610 yr Good luck to anyone who sees a business opportunity and can make some money on the way.No problem for me, but I do think it is ridiculous that Chiang Mai effectively has no consul now, at a time when countries are opening new ones.

Same in Phuket! Have you written to complain about the lack of UK consular service in comparison to that provided by other countries ? If not you are part of the problem.

So the UK must have 24/7 stuff in LOS because you or I want to do stuff...? erm ..... yes. By the same thinking the British Foreign office could sell the rest of the Embassy Grounds to the Central Group and the Ambassador and the team could all go home to Blightly.

The consul stopped being of any use to us mere mortals, a long time ago. Wasn't really missed when they finally shut it down

The UK does have 24/7 'stuff' based in BKK which is very different to having a locally based a Consul in places where many UK expats live. The British Embassy does not even provide an outreach service unlike the American an Australian Embassy's.

The British Embassy certainly aren't there to provide services to British citizens living in Thailand anymore. Sent from my SM-T815Y using Tapatalk
