Palm Tree

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the Thai name of this tree below? My gf said the name was big banana tree but I don't believe her. I'm looking to buy a couple and live about one hour from Kalasin. If you can point me to somewhere that sells them I would appreciate it.

.....Love your girlfriend's response. Just like my missus.....typical Thai response.......plucked straight from their imagination when they havent a clue! ........The nearest they can get to thinking I fear. I suppose they cant simply say 'sorry, I dont know' as that means losing face.

There is another similar 'palm' tree I like with several big flat 'fans' of leaves like this sprouting almost from ground level, and not just one. I dont see it often so it cannot be so popular......Shame because I think it is really attractive.

Travelers palm, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravenala

We bought some in Udon Thani, if you need further details let me know, widely available.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to get a local supplier to order two for me.

Spot on with the gf reply. And getting her to answer a yes or no question is like pulling hen's teeth. She always starts with this long dissertation and I have to stop her and say yes or no.

I also like the other palm tree you are talking about. I think it is the one below.

My GF immediately said "Banana Palm" or "Banana Fan Palm".

She said they look great at the young age shown above but become less attractive as they get older and spindly.

Nope, not that one mate. The one I like is totally flat when viewed from the side and could be planted flat against a wall or fence. I tried googling it but cant find a satisfatory photo that Im sure is the one. I'll keep a look out and post a photo if I see one.

If you haven't already, try Googling tropical trees and Thailand trees.

The Nursery folks are supposed to come this afternoon and plant them. They are supposed to be about 8 feet tall but you know how that goes around here. I paid 800 Baht each for them. After they get in the ground I'll post a photo.

Here is a pic of a fully grown one. I think it is kinda majestic myself.

Bless my soul they showed up when they were supposed to. The trees are about ten feet tall. As they require a lot of water I put PVC pipe to the bottom of the roots. The guy said they would grow about 800cm per year.

Same tree? or very closely related! I planted some in a house I had in Pattaya about 15 years ago and that's how they grew, they didn't look as nice as this one as the wind tends to shred the leaves. Problem with them is once they get tall you loose all the shade that you enjoyed as they were growing.

Original post removed due to too many posts. I suppose it is the same tree but......The nursery guy said it's the same. I guess time will tell.

The common name is the travelers palm there are some mature examples in front of the Raffels hotel in Singapore. We had 2 that lasted about 5 years, we now have about 3 more very young ones post-44962-0-12631600-1457870639_thumb.j

The tree you are refering to is also known to many as a Fan Palm as well as a Traveler's Palm

That is the problem with common names of plants, there can be ten different plants with the same common name, or ten different common names for the same plant.

It's scientific name is Ravenala madagascariensis

It is actually not a palm tree, but closely related to a banana and a bird of paradise plant ( Strelitzia).

They are very fat growing, I planted one about one foot tall three years ago and now it is well over thirty feet tall..

The following information is from Wikipedia.

Ravenala is a genus of flowering plants with a single species, Ravenala madagascariensis, commonly known as traveller's tree oror traveller's palm, from Madagascar. It is not a true palm (family Arecaceae) but a member of a monocotyledonous flowering plant family,Strelitziaceae. The genus is closely related to the southern African genus Strelitzia and the South American genus Phenakospermum. Some older classifications include these genera in the banana family (Musaceae). Although it is usually considered to be a single species, four different forms have been distinguished.[1][2]
