intra ocular lens transplant: can someone give any review on their experience?

Dear all,

I'm suffering from Presbyopia due to my age (44). I've visited a hospital in my home country and they recommend a lens transplant.

Someone on this board has done a lens transplant in Thailand? If so, where, what was the price, and what is your experience.

This could be valuable information for everybody.

Please don't continue this thread with telling how bad/good. I want some reviews from people who has done the transplant, or who might know someone who has done the surgery.

Thanks for all.

I believe you are thinking about IOL replacement rather than a 'transplant'

http://www.tecnisiol.com/eu/tecnis-symfony-iol.htm

Presbyopia is a 'normal' condition associated with aging and most often only reading glasses are need for an effective result

I doubt there will be many who have undergone surgery with the single aim of solving/curing presbyopia.

The Rutnin Eye Hospital would be considered by many to be the best place to obtain a specialist opinion in Thailand

I also have never heard of IOL transplants, but I am no expert.

I have had IOL replacement about 4/5 years ago for deteriorating vision and initial indications of cataracts.

The procedure was carried out at Bangkok Phuket hospital over several days, between eyes, by Dr.Sinchai

Tanabodeetamajaree at the hospital eye clinic and I have never had any reason to regret having the procedure.

I was 63/4 at the time and as far as I can remember the cost at the time was around 78,000 Thai baht per eye.

From the many posters on the clinic walls recommending this type of surgery it would seem to be more aimed

at over 50s and upwards and can be repeated if necessary, but as I said I am no expert.

It did take me some time to get used to not reaching for my specs for a while but I did get over that lol.

Of course where you go for your specialist opinion will depend on where you are in Thailand, Good luck.

I am not aware of any TV members who had IOL for correction of presbyopia except in conjunction with cataract removal.

It has only very recently become available in Thailand (only 2 places that I know of: Rutnin and TRSC, and even there I don't think they have done many). So I can't recommend having it done here in Thailand if that is what you have in mind. Better done in a Western country where the technique has been around longer, and that is also where you are more likely to find some online first hand accounts.

Might do better to do a sear

4/5 years ago could hardly be classed as " only very recently " can it?

As well as my own experience Sheryl I am aware of at least 4/5 other people here in

Phuket who have had the same same procedure and some of them before me.

I am fairly sure that at least 2 eye doctors at Bangkok Phuket Hospital have been carrying

out this procedure for at least the last 8 to 10 years so I am afraid I would have to say your

perceived knowledge and information is some years out of date!!

Because you only know of 2 places does not make your limited knowledge fact, perhaps

it is you who needs to do a search before you post your OPINION as fact??

Hi all,

The clinic I have been recommended is Medipolis in Belgium. They call it a IOL, they call it literaly translated, lens replacement.

This is done to all people who have no specific problems with eyes, just suffering from farsightness caused by ageing or also called presbyopia.

Lasik and all other methods are, according to Medipolis not recommended, because when adjusting the eye for better reading, you will eventually loose sight for objects far away.

Therefor, a lens replacement is recommended.

I try to find people who have experience about this procedure.

In Belgium, the entire operation is at a huge cost (€ 7200).

oz457 I would have no hesitation in recommending Dr. Sinchai at the Bangkok Phuket

Hospital for your requirements and for the same cost or possibly a little less you could

have yourself a couple of weeks holiday in Phuket. Hope I have helped you.

phuketjock.

Just carried out a quick search on google for " intraocular lens replacement Thailand "

Lots of info there for you oz..

Can you name the implants you received ?

Unless you underwent a procedure designed to specifically relieve Presbyopia (which you did not according to an earlier post you made) you comments are ill-informed and unhelpful.

Intraocular lens replacement procedure is the same for cataracts, relief of presbyopia,

or for whatever the reason for the procedure, the name or type of implants/replacements

lens is irrelevant the procedure for intraocular lens replacement is the same no matter what

the reason for it or the type of replacement lens fitted, excepting possibly a larger or smaller

slot in the outer ocular membrane to accommodate different sizes/types of lenses.

If you or Sheryl have not had the procedure then it is you who's comments are ill-informed

and useless to someone looking for real information to enable them to make a reasonably

informed decision on a procedure that once performed cannot be reversed, albeit I have yet

to come across anyone who has had the procedure, for whatever reason, who is not wholly

happy with the short and long term results of said procedure. Do you, or for that matter Sheryl

actually know anyone who a. has had the procedure and b. who is not happy with the results???

I agree and would add that Rutnin is world famous and probably far better than most "western" countries

Bit puzzled about that comment unless I'm misunderstanding the technique used. I had both eyes done with lens replacement surgery due to cataracts around 10 years ago at Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok and the doctor had performed probably a thousand of them at that time. It's even available in Chiang Mai at some facilities.

phuketjock I had the Refractive Lens Exchange with Multifocal Lens replacement done at Bangkok Hospital Phuket. I had the lens operation done by Dr Captain Wiriyaluppa. My operation was done in 2010. I did not get the results I was hoping for.

I suffer now from blurred vision, sometimes depth perception difficulties and light halo's during night driving.

I had my operation to correct Presbyopia and hardening of the biological lens.

Not everybody gets the excellent results that you got. I must also add that I am a type 1 diabetic, over 50 years young.

Both time and technology advance.

There are solutions which do not involve "lens replacement" which is why a centre of excellence should be chosen if a person wishes to explore an operative solution to Presbyopia .

The link leads to one such high tec. option.

Thanks bahtboy for your report. I hope to get some more reports from other people.

I'll problably do the operation in Belgium. Because it seems they don't take very good care about hygiene and they ask more money when they do something wrong.

Incepto I am sorry to hear you did not get the hoped for results from your lens replacements procedure and

I would hope that you were well informed about the possible consequences of it not going exactly to plan as

I was by Dr. Sinchai.

It is, of course, little help to yourself but you are the first person I have heard of that has had the procedure

and had any problems whatsoever.

I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes in 2000 and have had glocoema ( i never can spell that right ) since then

so I count myself fortunate that I have had and still do have Dr. Sinchai to monitor my condition on a regular, 4

monthly basis. Thanks for your input.

I have recently done a lot of research on IOL in Thailand - Bangkok Phuket does indeed offer the procedure for around 90K per eye and they're pushing it like crazy. TRSC informed me that they do not offer IOL procedures at this time. I'm waiting to get an appointment with Rutinin who are i.m.o. hands down THE place to go for eye surgery in Thailand.

Was the procedure offered related to Presbyopia exclusively ?

If so which specific procedure was offered ?

@sunnyjim5

In my case, the procedure was recommended by the Belgian Medipolis clinic in Antwerp.

I was looking forward to find other procedures, but apparently, they come at a price. You will eventually loose some focus on objects far away.

So you'll gain sharpness in objects (books, smartphone) close, but you'll loose some quality in objects far away.

The IOL procedure seems to be the one with almost no price. Far and short objects should be sharp HD quality. But.... you might loose some contrast. That's what I have been told.

I have been testing with daily contact lenses in one eye of +1.5. They are hard to find though in Thailand. I only found them around nana area, frequented by tourists. It seems the thai's are more in need of minus lenses.

I would love to hear from other people their good and bad experience about IOL operations. You know, the eyes are one of the most important organs of a human. And I don't want to fool around.

Kind regards.

Kurt

Thanks Kurt,

I believe Medopolis is a private facility.

Did you seek an opinion from the Antwerp University Hospital which I am told enjoys an outstanding reputation?

Anyway I wish you well in what ever you decide but would urge that you seek a opinion from Rutnin EyeHospital before making a decision.

Best wishes

As I'm from Brussels, I will still contact AZ leuven and check with them too. Not sure what is their reputation about eye surgeries.

As you figured it out, Medipolis is a private facility and therefor is more expensive.

I also contacted Rutnin eye hospital. I'm feeling sorry I didn't know about this hospital a month ago, because I was in Thailand for business and holidays.

My next visit to Thailand is scheduled next year, or, if sales is good maybe in September.

Thanks.

I had Kamra surgery in the UK about 4 years ago, age 57. That is an implant in one eye of a fixed diameter ring and Lasik on both eyes. For the same reasons as you.

My surgeon impressed two things on me..Firstly every person is unique and will have different solutions according to their problems,

secondly, and more importantly you eyeball will be changing shape during your forties and fifties, causing the need for different prescriptions every two years or so.

Thus any surgery done during this time, until the latter part of your fifties, when the shape changing slows right down to almost stable, will most likely be a temporary fix, as

no one can stop the eyeball from continuing to change shape.

I have been glasses free now for 4 years with 20:20 vision and am absolutely delighted with the results of my surgery. I used Focus Clinic, Dr David Allamby. If you are UK based have a consultation, first rate .

We appear to have a case of apples and oranges here. Pseudophakic IOL is a very common procedure used to completely replace the lens in millions of people affected by cataracts every year and by default what most people would call "IOL". But OP does not appear to be talking about this but the must less common phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) which is an additional lens over your natural lens.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intraocular_lens

Edit: After review of OP seems I am wrong and he needs for presbyopia so probably would be pseudophakic IOL of the multi vision type. Sorry.
