Thai Government Puts Water on Special Price Control List

BANGKOK: -- The Thai government has added drinking water to the special price control list to protect citizens as the country faces an impending drought. Internal Trade Department director-general Wiboonlasana Ruamraksa said the government was keeping a close eye on the drought’s impact, which went into effect earlier in the year.

Drinking water has been included in the special price control list for daily monitoring, according to Ms. Wiboonlasana. She did note that the drought will not impact the drinking water supply, so consumers need not be concerned.

The MWA (Metropolitan Waterworks Authority) urged households to reserve a minimum of 60 liters of drinking water for the drought season, which lasts until May. There will be less tap water available for households in Nonthaburi, Bangkok and Samut Prakan.

If they are advising people to keep a supply of 60 kiters of water in their homes then how can they also say that they don't expect the shortage to affect the drinking water supply?

Yesterday in my local Big C store you could not push a trolley down the soft-drinks isle...it was full of pallets laden with drinking water over 6ft high all the way along..Do Big C expect panic buying?

I only drink beer so no ploblum

Impending drought already in place.

Bottled water on special price control.

Songkran still a go !

Songkran is only once a year, lasting 3-7 days depending on location. How about car washing places??? Every day, every town, city and shopping center, and the amount of water wasted per car...

Even bigger problem: Golf Ranges wacko.png

I'm sure there will be some token attempts at conservation but those and such as those will still get their cars washed and their golf courses watered etc.

Within the last few days I've still seen the trucks out watering the trees and shrubs on central reservations of main roads.

A good thing for the government to have done, well done them.

I also still see lottery tickets being sold for 100-120 baht .....whistling.gifwhistling.gif

Passed three shops this morning with people outside with water hoses spraying the roads all around them. I know they do it to keep the dust down but surely this should be outlawed for the duration of the drought ? All Klongs completely dry in my area and i've never seen that before in nine years of living here.

With a CEO Peter Brabeck quoted saying “access to water should not be a public right” I wouldn’t be surprised if Nestlé lawyers are preparing to sue the government for that.

Nestlé Denies that Water is a Fundamental Human Right

as a tropical country rain is not scarce here. what is scare is the will or the ability, or both, to plan ahead and manage the water resource effectively

Indeed, it is aggravating to think that, given the abundance of water in many areas, and availability of cheap labor, that Thailand doesn't have a world class water distribution/sharing system between all the regions, North to South.

Yingluck's gang had some projects lined up but got squashed for potential corruption. The current PM mentioned some water infrastructure projects shortly after "taking" office, no idea if anything was ever done.

They're not, that was a quote made several weeks ago by the water authority and has since been revised.

To what exactly....100 litres ?

It is a bit late now , but if successive Administrations had paid more attention to this important resource instead of just talking about it Thailand wouldn't need bottled water , this latest fad of bottled water will not cure one problem that has evolved over decades of neglected Government policy . Forget about your high speed trains or submarines there needs to be a scoping plan of at least 25 years to improve water resources with the introduction of desalination and recycle water, for until Thailand stops handing out bottled water , Thailand is indeed a third world country. coffee1.gif

In the UK they usually have a hose pipe ban in times of drought.None here .I have a suspicion /fear that the taps will just go dry without warning .

There is, at least where I live. We went on water hours right at the end of "rain" season. Just got back from 1 month abroad, and the water only comes on every other day and very low pressure. People I know, and many more that I don't, are a lot worse off and have been for months.

Personally I keep a 30 liter supply of water and a weeks supply of food just in case

there is some kind of emergency/disaster. Whether we are enduring a drought or

not people should have some level of preparedness. No reason to become a prepper

but be a little prepared. facepalm.gif

That has ruined many of my nice blouses while driving motobike.

Special price just for you my friend.

Buy a water filter before the prices skyrocket.
