BANGKOK: -- Phayao provincial governor Supachai Iamsuwan led about 3,000 officials, students, local administrators and members of the public in a walk through the provincial two to campaign for water conservation in wake of the worst drought in several decades.

The governor told the media that the event was intended to create awareness among people in the province to use water sparingly because the water at Kwan Phayao lake which is the main source of water for consumption in the province is enough for consumption for just 72 days.

All provincial units have been told by the provincial waterworks authority to stop pumping water from Kwan Phayao lake as part of the water conservation campaign.

Meanwhile, Romyen tambon administration organization mayor in Chiang Kham district said that the administration had prepared water trucks to distribute water to the needy in 22 villages in Tambon Romyen although there has not been a request for water.

He said that the hill people in the 22 villages have their own water source which is still capable of responding to their need of water for consumption.
