Abhisit urges CDC to think twice before submitting to NCPO’s proposal

BANGKOK: -- Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva today urged the Constitution Drafting Committee to think carefully before incorporating the National Council for Peace and Order’s latest proposal into the constitution draft.

The NCPO proposed a 250-member fully-appointed Senate to be in the office for five years which shares as much power as the House; five top military leaders and the national police chief as the ex-officio senators; and that the prime minister needs not be an MP.

Mr Abhisit pointed out that the proposed empowering of the Senate to choose the prime minister would go against the CDC’s principle and would lead to a state of condition whereby there would be a bargain for power between the military and the political camp.

He said he didn’t understand why the five military top brass and the national police chief would have to be made ex-officio senators. He noted that if the NCPO was afraid that these men would not be able to perform their duties properly because of government’s interference, it would be more logical for certain mechanism to be set up to prevent such interference.

Mr Abhisit said he would like to give his moral support to the CDC to do the right thing for the benefit of the people rather than submitting to the wish of demand of certain group of people.

He predicted that the NCPO’s proposal would lead to more conflict in the society which would backfire on all the achievements of the military junta.

Abhist is a worm who is a big part of why Thailand is a grand mess and getting worse, but he's right here and at least it's better late than never.

Also not a fan of Abhisit. But he is spot on with this one. Uncle Too has finally shown us his roadmap that he has been talking about: military/military-backed rule for the foreseeable future. Destination: Disaster.

One would hope the CDC would think twice, however the game has played past full time and although Mark and the good Thai people have reason to be concerned and nothing short of all members of parliament being elected by the people, this Junta are a law unto themselves,, make no bones about it, Prayut - O has clawed back all the power that the military lost in the student up rising , so what is the lies to be told from here , we are only caretaking for five years to ensure there are no more Coups , believe that and pink elephants fly, they are there for the long haul. ................................................coffee1.gif

Talking the thin line of politics now and until 2017

is going to get more tenuious by the month,

Having the integrity to do right by the people

at the moment seems to be a misnomer,

trying to be so cute with a backup plan

ensuring a place of power that has not been voted for

by the People,

Like selling a car and then telling the new owner when, he or she can drive it !

But he speaks so highly of you?

It matters not, this is and has been nothing short of a very bad chess game played by monkeys, however one side has the other continually in check and if the correct move isn't made soon it will be checkmate. It appears the only move would be for outside intervention to stop the game. Use your imagination.

Abhisit never could win a democratic election and now he never will. He is just a has been. A poodle of the military who have no further use for him or Suthep. He should quit politics and get a job since he has zero chance of ever gaining the trust of the majority of the voters again.

Agreed, but a small typo

he has zero chance of ever gaining the trust of the majority of the voters again.

Well, Ahbisit is getting fat...on something, Ha! According to the BKP he says that

"If the system is messed up with questions about [the NPCO] prolonging its stay in power ... we're heading for a new conflict which will ruin everything the NCPO has tried to do," he said.

I wonder what 'conflict' he has in mind? Is he suggesting he will encourage his followers to proceed that way? Is it an 'ultimatum'?

Will a permanent military government work for Abhisit then?

If Abhisit plays nice with Prayut and Meechai, he might get a senatorial appointment.

One thing is for certain. The PM has been talking a lot about reconciliation. He may be doing just that. He may end up taking two sides that despise each other and eventually turning them into allies against the current government with the proposals the government wants to incorporate into the Constitution.
