please forgive me if I have if I have put this question in the wrong place, Anyway Australian Immigration have given my lady a 12 month multiple entry visa and have pretty much told her this is the last one, whilst she is here I plan for us to get married for the simple reason of making the permanent residency process a bit easier, but as I am not religious and I am planning a "proper wedding" further down the track for her in Thailand, I am just considering this wedding to be merely a legal transaction similar to registering my ute, my question is should I get a ring for her and why are engagement rings flasher then the actual wedding ring should I just get an engagement ring and use that as a wedding ring or should i get both. Im sorry this sounds trivial but maybe someone that has been married before can help me.

You are definitely asking in the wrong place.

See, personally, were I to decide I loved a woman enough to marry her, I would hope to have enough of a rapport with her that I could discuss the issues and find out her opinion before I would turn to a disgruntled expat forumn for lousy advice.

But that's just me.

her and I have already discussed this but as this won't be our proper wedding she has left the nuts and bolts up to me, as I have never been married I was hopping for a little advice from people that have gone through the whole wedding thing before.

In that case get the hardware now, there will always be a reason not to later.

Also, and for me this is a big one, buy the rings in aus, that way you can avoid buying garish Thai gold.

The engagement ring thing is personal, a simple wedding band is all I would want, but it's an aesthetic choice, and up to the both of you.

How romantic.

If you are married forget PR. Go straight for citizenship. Easier, cheaper and faster. Just don't mention that you have a marriage of convenience.

She does need PR for four years before she can get citizenship.

Engament rings are flashier because your still in the bubble of love and likely to be plain stupid about how much you spend, You should have brought her in on a spouse visa, on that need to marry within a certain time frame and of course costs associated with it...think the total cost now has doubled to around $7000.

Since you have never married before there is little chance of talking you out of it, property laws as they are in Australia will pretty much kill you if she takes off after only a few years and your manage to have a child or two in that time, of course we need to be trusting in our partners and in many cases it works out well...
