I have been in LOS for several years, and the amount of times I have seen bottled water sitting outside of Tesco Lotus or 7/11 in the sweltering hear, creates and crates of the stuff. In case you were not aware, the plastic that the water is in contact with can release dangerous and potentially deadly chemicals and carcinogens, especially when heated. What ways are there around this? I did take to drinking only soda water as it is in glass bottles, but I am not sure of the nutrition benefits from strictly soda water? I cannot find glass bottled water apart from that, and I assume if there were such a thing it would be pricey?

There is not much evidence of actual harm being caused and the American FDA has said the very low levels of BPA found in some items is safe.

Sorry but I do not trust much of what the FDA and or the US government splurges out. You have to remember that both parties are a business of sorts, and your best interest is not t the top of their priorities

As you wish.

As a matter of interest what source of evidence would you find acceptable/believable ?

Went through the same process as you OP...

Our plastic bottles that we get delivered taste like ****. Kind of a bitter chemical aftertaste. Phthalates, BPA etc.

There are a few companies that deliver water in glass, however in my case, I'm out of the delivery zone!

Reverse osmosis, and storage in high grade stainless steel is the best option AFAIK

You might be able to find a glass bottle water co if you visit some higher end guesthouses... they might have a company deliver to them (as they do here in Cm)

Looks like not all Reverse Osmosis films are equal - so roadside kiosks would have to be researched... as for home-based units, I bet they're pricey, but assuming the right film is used probably the only solution

Removal of bisphenol A (BPA) from water by various nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes.

Abstract

The removal of an endocrine disrupting compound, bisphenol A (BPA), from model solutions by selected nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes was studied. The commercially available membranes NF 90, NF 270, XLE BWRO, BW 30 (Dow FilmTech), CE BWRO and AD SWRO (GE Osmonics) were used to compare their performances for BPA removal. The water permeability coefficients, rejection of BPA and permeate flux values were calculated for all membranes used. No significant changes in their BPA removal were observed for all tight polyamide based NF and RO membranes tested except for loose NF 270 membrane. The polyamide based membranes exhibited much better performance than cellulose acetate membrane for BPA removal. Almost a complete rejection (≥ 98%) for BPA was obtained with three polyamide based RO membranes (BW 30, XLE BWRO and AD SWRO). But cellulose acetate based CE BWRO membrane offered a low and variable (10-40%) rejection for BPA.

RO is not really that expensive - below is 3,750 baht from Lazada

I used to rent a house but these days I am in an apartment of sorts and cannot install such things. My only option is tap water (no I am not insane so won't go near that) or to buy bottled water, plastic or glass; or at least I think that is my only option.. I may go and take trip to Big C or places such as Villa Market and see what kind of glass bowling they do. I have never really taken it into consideration over the years for some reason

What makes you think that the drinking water in the normal plastic/glass bottle has nutrition benefits? The RO process would remove all minerals.

My Mother in Law lives in a small Thai village just outside Lopburi. She is 87 years old has never drunk "fancy" water from glass bottles or from some "purification " device.

Can someone please explain why this lady is not only alive but active and capable of growing her own veg, maintaining her house , doing her laundry etc.

Is she 'tough' or just unimpressed by "falang" water nonsense ?

Most likely she has used rain water to drink - also without minerals - which are not required in water for health. But most local MIL would not be of that lifespan. But the danger for foreigners is contamination by bacteria that they have not grown up with so may overcome there system before they can defend themselves. Drinking safe water is a very sane idea.

with respect borehole water isn't the same thing as phthalate/BPA contaminated bottled water, food, milk, juice etc...

I want my (and my son's) endocrines undisrupted in this brave new chemical world smile.png

Good point though - I hate relying on bottle deliveries.. when I go back to the UK it always shocks me the stink of chlorine from the taps too... that's a nasty chemical to drink over a lifetime!

Xenoestrogens are a type of xenohormone that imitates estrogen. Synthetic xenoestrogens include widely used industrial compounds, such as PCBs, BPA and phthalates, which have estrogenic effects on a living organism

BPA is a known endocrine disruptor, and numerous studies have found that laboratory animals exposed to low levels of it have elevated rates of diabetes, mammary and prostate cancers, decreased sperm count, reproductive problems, early puberty, obesity, and neurological problems.[81][82][83][84]

I have been using the Berkey Water Filter System for over 6 years now. An excellent product, bought mine here http://www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/

I bought the "Travel Berkey", a family may want a larger one like the "Big Berkey".

I have no affiliation with the company but they have given me excellent service, quick response, ship world wide including replacement filters. Lots of other places sell this product, just google it.

Started using RO water stored in high grade stainless steel.... worked OK, tiresome... but then the ants arrived by the hundreds into the container. Didn't get as far as organising an ant moat of diatomaceous earth around the base... 4000thb down the drain. Should really get round to a decent filter as posted above.

Definitely that sort of thing a must in the west against tap water... can't believe people drink that stuff... but it's like eating garlic, then you can't smell it

fwiw, apparently BPA free plastics may be worse that the BPA,

water and RO are like supplements, very complicated and shifting argument stances...

RO seems your only option, but then that is another can of worms, long term you really gonna do that... probably not.

1st world problem IMHO

Soda water may be bad for your teeth.
Apparently the BPA in the slick receipt paper is around 100 times more potent than in the plastic water bottles.
I often wonder where does the water originate from in soda water, beer, etc...
I prefer distilled water or purified to mineral water though some prefer the opposite. Most all of the mineral water I have tasted in Thailand does not taste right. Even the purified water in plastic bottles sometimes has a taste, perhaps it is the plastic as mentioned.

Such a toxic world these days.
