BANGKOK, 18 March 2016 (NNT) – The Deputy Prime Minister has said that the draft constitution’s clauses on the Election Commission still need adjustment while affirming that the use of appointed senators is not to extend the authority of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Kreau-ngam has assured that the use of appointed senators during the 5 year transitional period from the current administration to an elected government is not to position proxies for the NCPO. He said the senators would be selected from all sectors and that they would be independent of influence. Nonetheless, he let on that he has not discussed the issue with the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC).

On suggestions for the senate to have 250 members to be able to balance against the House of Representatives, Wissanu said he believes the transitional upper housemen should not have the ability to call a no-confidence vote but have the authority to approve or disapprove of lower house decisions. He conceded however, that the structure of the system will be up to the CDC.

The deputy premier affirmed that the draft charter’s sections on the Election Commission have to be amended, especially to ensure the body is accountable for its use of funds.

All b/s!

A little message from the DPM to the Election Commission. The DPM wants something. The EC budget oversight is now in play.

Regarding the transition Senate, nice to confirm the Junta is aiming for veto power. In addition to capturing the PM spot.

For some time it has been clear - the Lower House will be the only body formed by elections, and it will be effectively neutered.

Indeed. Welcome to a "new" and "better" Thailand, where the old guard can happily feed at the trough without interference from upstarts, and every election is just an exercise in futility.

Khun Kreau-ngam no doubt has a good memory of the calibre of "elected" senators previously.

He doesn't want the govt to be a real family/friend affair where senators are in the pockets of the politicians. No point in a senate if that is the case. Don't get me wrong I am a strong supporter of nepotism and cronyism if you own a fish and chip shop. However successful govt's are not "family businesses" When a govt becomes a family business the name changes to a regime.

This is essentially insurance if the reforms don't work and Thai's go back to the Thailand the majority of Thai's do not want to go back to...

Yes, better have appointed elite senators so that there is not even a remote chance of any form of progress!

If the majority of Thais don't want to go back then why not put it to a vote? I mean, according to government polls 99.3 % are happy with Uncle Too so an election should be but a mere formality, right?

Correct on the high % that appreciate what this govt have done and I appreciate your comment on this hearty discussion. though 99.3 is no longer the case and could never be sustained. It slowly crept down and was at 85% in March, 2015.

Reforms first though remember lest we go back to a broken system that in the long run ensures another coup of which no one wants. I for one hate coups thus hope this reform process works and is not rushed.

I also appreciate the insurances govt oversight to ensure that violence in the streets does not rear it's ugly head again. I would miss the peace we currently live under and most others would to going by record tourist arrivals...oh and the 85% approval rating.

Have a lovely day my friend and thanks for your input.

He doesn't want the govt to be a real family/friend affair where senators are in the pockets of the politicians.

Last December Chairman of the National Reform Steering Commission's political reform committee Seree Suwanpanont said that allowing family members of MPs to apply to be candidates for the Senate was acceptable.

Nothing changes then except the pockets become the military.
