Just to clarify something, if the non Thai father's name is on the birth certificate but was not married to the Thai mother when the child was born, can he still apply for this visa type?

Thx in advance

There is no visa for supporting a Thai child. It is visa or extension of stay based upon being the parent of a Thai.

You can single entry non-o visas and 60 day extension of stay with only your name on a your child's birth certificate. You can get a multiple entry non-o visa in Savannakhet if your child and their mother are with you when you apply to prove you are living together as a family (de facto marriage) with no financial proof needed. You can also get one in Penag without the family being with you if you can show at least 100k baht a bank or proof of income.

To get a one year extension of stay at immigration you must legitimize your parenthood. See: How To Gain Parental Rights As A Father

Immigration does not issue multiple entry visas. The multiple entry non-o visa can on be obtained at a Thai embassy or consulate.

The only thing you can get at immigration is a 60 day extension to visit your child.

No.

  • You may get one from the Thai Consulate in Savannakhet, Laos if you take your child and their mother with you. No financial requirements. Being named on the birth certificate is enough.
  • You can get one from the Thai Consulate in Panang, Malaysia. Your family don't need to go with you, but you need a minimum of 100K baht in the bank. Again, no need to be a legal parent.

Seeing that it is for a book you probably want to make sure that you get the terminology right and cite the sources.:

Title 3. NON-IMMIGRANT VISA, other activities (Category "O")

to stay with the family

The visa, obtainable from Thai consulates, are not for the purpose of travelling to Thailand to support the applicant's child of Thai nationality, but to visit such child.

Are these the only places, or could I, if I can show funds, get this from a Thai consulate in say, Phnom Penh or even a UK consulate?

Do funds need to be in a Thai bank account (I have one) or can it be any stable currency given you are in another country during the application process?

Phnom Penh does not do multiple entry visas. The UK would be a big maybe there have been reports of applications being rejected even with funds shown.

In Penang it can be in a Thai bank or the equivalent in foreign bank. For other places I cannot an answer your question.

Ia addition I believe the UK Thai Hon. Consulates are required to submit all application for ME visas to the Embassy for approval.

  • If getting the multiple entry non 'O' from countries neighbouring Thailand you are limited to Savannakhet and Penang.
  • As it stands I would say Penang is the best choice and the funds can be in a non Thai bank but must be the equivalent to at least 100K baht.
  • The Thai Embassy in London is not likely to issue this visa if you're not married to the mother.

If you require more time in Thailand while you decide what to do you can apply for a 60 day extension of stay to visit your child.

You need the family with you to prove your are living together as a family (de facto marriage). The don't ask to see legitimization documents.

Savannakhet and Penang are your best bets neighboring Thailand.

It may also be possible to obtain from a consulate at your home country's Thai [honorary] consulate. There can be several consulates, each with their own specific requirements. So you have to check each one or ask around.

In USA, Portland and Dallas have good reports. You'll probably need an English translation of Thai Birth Cert.

The would have to be with you even with legitimization documents. They require your family to be with you for the reason I wrote before.

The embassy of a country deals with the relations between governments. Treaties and stuff. The ambassador cuts ribbons.

The Thai Embassy in Laos deals with the relations between the Thai gov. and the Lao gov. Not individual persons applying for visas and things like that.

If you want a visa in Vientiane, or a Thai passport, or if you are a Thai citizen in a Lao prison, you need to contact the Thai consulate, (attached to the Thai embassy), not the Thai embassy, they wouldn't touch you with a pole.

Misleading. Embassies invariably have consular sections that provide consular services. The consular section of an embassy usually has full power to issue all kinds of visas, issue passports and all other consular services. In addition, there may be consulates that are independent of the embassy in other locations. These are intended to provide convenience to those unable to attend the embassy's consular section. Consulates can be official (funded and controlled directly by the relevant government department) or honorary (privately funded but empowered to provide consular services). Each consulate, in most cases, is only permitted to provide a subset of the services provided by the embassy's consular section.

I agree with you, but my post is not misleading.

I am saying that the embassy and the consulate, attached to the embassy, do different things.
