Hello All,

I have a AIS fibre 50/20 subscription (the VDSL type) and I want to replace the stock Huawei router by my own DSL-AC68U router.

I can connect successfully but the issue is my connection is very unstable and I get disconnected multiple times a day.

I suspect it is due to not setting up correctly the VDSL settings such the Annex A/B the profile 17a etc. AIS did not help at all.

I am attaching a screenshot here to picture what I mean.

Has anyone here successfully set up a non-stock router-modem with AIS fibre? If yes what would the appropriate DSL menu settings/tweaking to ensure a stable connection ?

Thanks a lot

I got the same router, but I am curious how you connect it. I got 3bb fiber and I could not replace the router as fiber opitcs is a different kind of connection as the network connection RJ45.

Maybe 3bb en Ais fibre are different.

I'm guessing you don't have access to the original router to check the settings? (Is it a Huawei by any chance?).

Is there no way to get it? A little tea money to a visiting technician?

I'm here in the sandpit and the first thing I did was demand the Root password.

I told them there was no way that I was going to grant unlimited access to my network to a bunch of bored technicians at the phone company.

They did not object.

Yep AIS fiber is type FTTB fiber (Fiber To The Building), that means the fiber cable just get pulled down to the building and the remaining distance is covered by telephone line using VDSL, therefore we can use VDSL modems with AIS.

I did manage to sort of "open up" the Huawei modem and could see all the settings there (btw I didn't find the root password but I did manage to give the "admin" user "root"privileges and i then subsequently closed the backdoor of the huawei router). Unfortunately some of the settings that I could see could not be set in the Asus router simply because the Asus did not have this particular setting value etc.

I get frustrated with AIS as they don't even seem to understand what I want if I could get in touch with a true competent engineer then yes I would offer some "cafe" to him.

Now that one is a toughy.

Are there not Thai forums that cover jiggery pokery with this router?

I used a second router as a relay...upstairs (wireless).

I guess this defeats your intentions though.... Anyways...one router is just as good as another. I get the same speeds.

I do the same, although the Wifi Router I use has much better Wifi than the Huawei. I'm essentially just using it as a modem, although I have a second Router plugged into it for VPN.

Thanks for the replies guys.

In fact I am OK since I use the Huawei router in bridge mode and therefore can use my own router with its full capacity.

But I bought the DSL model specifically in order to have to use the Huawei modem and save some space in my room.

I've looked at some Thai forum to no avail will ask my Thai colleagues to look into it too just in case.

Please let us know how you fair. I have the same AIS 50/20 and my asus ac68u is now gathering dust as the AIS technician couldn't set it up .

All right guys, for what it's worth I think I have managed to get it to work properly.

The key thing was to play with the "Stability Adjustment (VDSL)" in the DSL settings menu.

This item helps you to tweak the SNR margin and increase stability. But the tradeoff is speed so you need to find the right balance.

I have set mine to 25db and now my line has been running all day with no issue. The higher the value (max 30db) the more stable it is. The lower the value the better performance you get but your line will get unstable and lose sync at times. I am sending a screenshot to show you how I set up my DSL settings.

Apart from that of course don't forget to obtain the login credential from AIS and furthermore you may need to "spoof" the AIS stock modem MAC address with your DSL-AC68U. All it means is that you enter the AIS modem MAC into the AC68U login page (at the very bottom) and it will make the gateaway believe you are using the authorized modem. Alternatively you can call AIS and ask them to register your AC68U MAC address so that you no longer need to spoof it.

I hope this helps:

Strange that they don't simply put a CAT6 network in the building instead. Here we have a FTTH connection, also AIS. The mechanic was even so kind and knowledgeable to put the modem in bridge mode for us so we can use our own router spinning DD-WRT instead. Works perfectly.
