driving licence

Featured Replies

Hello, i am going to get my Thai driving licence next week on Samui, now i want to know which is better to have with me, i live in Chiang Mai so i have the house book in my name, but i work on Samui and have a work permit here.

Which would be better in the long run and most convenient seeing as i dont drive so much in CM and i might only be on Samui for another 6 months.

I look forward to your guidance

I have a European driving licence and im English

Kevin

Some info here that might help....

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/891552-driving-license-again/

You need a medical certificate first time around, and a letter from Immigration, confirming your address.. (500 baht!)

I would presume that would need to be a Samui address (?) If you have a work permit here, then surely you would have a local address...?

Also take your UK licence...

Remember they only issue on Monday Wednesday and Friday.... The place you go is in Lipa Noi, follow signs to Raja ferry, the License place is before and on the left side up a long boulevarded road (just before the military base! )

Hope this helps...

You can get a driving license with residence certificate from immigration or work permit or yellow house book.

I did my first with only work permit.

You will need health certificate.

Dress properly or you will be sent away. (long trousers, no wife-beater)

You need to be there before 9 AM.

Location: DLT

Do you still need an International Driver Permission to obtain Thai Driver License first time without the full test...?

First time I had an IDP, and a medical test from a local clinic (think Transport Office prefer a Hospital now), and address-confirmation letter from Immigration – should pass colorblind and reaction tests only. But that is some year back now. When renew we now shall watch an hour-long video about traffic behavior.

A German friend of mine was there about a month ago to apply for Thai DL for car, and he did not have an IDP, so he had to get through a full written test; which he failed, as he could not understand enough English to answer the questions.facepalm.gif

I have never had to show a IDP .... even first time around .... I've renewed my licence twice now....

A friend who applied for first licence, not so long ago, only needed letter from Immigration and a letter from doctor .Which was not a hospital btw... that costs more! !) .... . and no IDP.

That's why I suggested taking the OP's UK licence with him... I think that should suffice...

Just in case anyone needs a vehicle and bike licence, just ask for both when applying, it's only a few baht more!

Did not need an IDP, but my car driving license was from Sweden and had English also on it, do not know about German driving licenses.

For the MC I had to take the test as I did not have that one before.

This was in the time when the test was on paper and pen and you had to laminate your license by yourself. oldman.gif

Now all laminated and issued before one leaves... a giant step forward then ! wink.png

Where is the best/cheapest place to get the medical certificate?

Where is the best/cheapest place to get the medical certificate?

Any doctor, or hospital.... it does not involve much, except to tell the doctor you are alive and well.... Cost at doctor's office will run between 100 and 300 baht, Hospital if I remember was 400 baht... The one near Tesco ... Thai Inter I think?

Where is the best/cheapest place to get the medical certificate?

I used Bandon Hospital 1½ year ago – thought I needed medical certificate for my 5-year renewal and the kind local elder doctor that used to charge 100 baht had closed his clinic – but I didn't keep the Bandon-receipt; it was 200 or 400 baht.

Normally Bandon (next to BigC) is considered the cheapest of the private hospitals; they used to state they charge same as a public hospital, but they seem to be more expensive now-on-days.

The benefit by using a private hospital or clinic is, that you have no waiting time – otherwise the public hospital in Nathon is both very kind, good and cheap, but you need to queue, so it may take you half-a-day...

Many of the hospital doctors have evening clinics... starting at 5 pm to 8 pm, some are busy for first hour or two, but after that usually no waits...

Dr Surasit, near the Maenam Post office would probably do it... never find him to be busy... always playing on his smartphone!

Depends where the OP is and which doc closest really...wink.png
