PM urges cultivation adaptation in dry season

BANGKOK, 23 March 2016 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has urged local authorities to pursue adaptations in cultivation that correlates to the current water situation, stressing that officials will not stand idle against corruption.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha gave his remark regarding cultivation during the dry season, that farmers are encouraged to adjust their cultivation plan accordingly to the water situation, especially in areas without irrigation support.

He said that changes in cultivation should be adjusted by changing the types of plants or farming method in relation to the available water in the area.

The government is now pushing for projects that will strengthen communities under the civil-state campaign, such as the community rice mills project. Local authorities are urged to add value to their local products through innovation such as the use of local materials for the manufacturing of export bags and clothes, the Prime Minister has said.

The Prime Minister gave these remarks while receiving Smart Farmer books from the Public Relations Department’s (PRD) Director-General Apinan Juntarungsri.

The book was published by the PRD, according to the Prime Minister’s order, to promote agricultural knowledge and His Majesty the King’s teachings on the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy.

The Prime Minister has also stressed that the government will not stand idle against corrupt conducts, and is ready to investigate reported issues. He assured all those involved with corruption will be punished.

He noted that baseless and faulty claims of corruption are also punishable by law, adding that all claims must be verified by related agencies, such as the National Anti-Corruption Commission, before legal actions can enacted.

Urges. Doesn't implement any viable program. Doesn't do anything to create more agricultural programs at educational institutions. Doesn't help create laws against corruption or an agency to enforce those laws. All he did is read a book and URGE.

I urge him to create a real democracy and eliminate all forms of crime and corruption. Now I can go outside and see the utopia I just created.

What about all the millions of cases of corruption that go on everyday???

Prayut has made clear his government relies on a secret list of influential people and alleged corrupt officials used to transfer officials to inactive duty posts before investigations can be conducted to determine their guilt or innocence. The military stands above civilian law, beholden only to itself.

Actually, the more accurate statement would read, "stressing that officials will not stand idle against corruption [unless it's perpetrated by the wrong influential person]."

Reading through various news articles published about the drought over the past year, it seems that the government has, over the past year, allocated more than US$280 million dollars to "alleviate the situation" - one wonders what this 10 billion baht has actually achieved, indeed one wonders how much of it actually went towards alleviating the drought...

(Not making any specific, baseless and faulty claims of corruption, mind you...)

All the most wonderful agricultural plans in the world are pretty useless if you have no money to change your farm with, no real prospect of selling the crop, no real idea of what, where and how to grow the new crop and of course no water to irrigate the crop with.

Apart from those trifling little niggley bits, the plan is a winner.

First I have ever heard of a prime minister who finds it convenient to give "Agricultural advice" to dirt poor farmers - I can only assume has has zero qualification in agriculture and/ or geology - Another knee jerk emotional sound bite perhaps?

Let's get back to basics. Let the farmers grow weed and they can water with Perrier.

I know some farmers in Issan and they received no incentives, no assistance whatsoever.

Where are the thousands of water bores that were to be drilled to save the Farmers, were any drilled in Issan?

Wait until middle of severe drought to tell farmers change their cultivation, with no education, training or support from Ag Ministry. Just do it because a General said so. Cancel the billions for more railways and educate Farmers and provide incentives for crop switching and new cultivation.

Where are the thousands of water bores that were to be drilled to save the Farmers, were any drilled in Issan?

Go and ask! You live in Issan right? Ground water is a last resort, bore holes should only generally be used for crops that require small amounts of water. Otherwise it will deplete the aquifer and cause further damage later! Rain is pretty much the only thing that works!

What Thai people don't eat vegetables etc.

If you produce 10 tons of beans or tomatoes, you want to sell in bulk preferably before it rots,you need a wholesale market in the same way that rice is marketed, this is beyond the scope of farmers. Our last rice crop was 50 tons,there is no way i could sell this without wholesale. Make a market for a produce or preferably for a variety of produce and the farmers will grow the stuff all by themselves, no need for booklets.

I can't imagine anyone is planting any water hungry crops this week. Farmers obviously already know there is a drought and this is not the time of year to plant.

Thai only watch simple tvprograms like soapseries or comedians, if it doesn't have all the added boingboing sounds they won't watch it.

There's plenty of other crops they grow around the world in similar dry climates. You can see it on tv/internet.
