Steel Wool

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if and where steel wool can be bought, here? I'm looking for 0000 (super fine grade) for cleaning and polishing. Thanks, pg

That grade really rusts away quickly in Thailand's humidity. I had to keep some that I bought in Japan in a plastic container with silica gel beads to keep it for any length of time. These days I've been using those "Magic Sponges" that are sold in supermarkets and home centers to do just about as good a job. The sponges are actually made from Melamine, which is quite a strong abrasive, but fine enough for most of the things that 0000 steel wool would be used for.

Lazada has sellers - but as said it rusts immediately.

maybe you can try an engineering shop that has a lathe - they most likely throw out steel shavings.

I would suggest the "Nut & Bolt" shop on Charoen Muang Rd, cross the Main CM bridge from Thae Pae go through the traffic lights and it's about 200 mtrs before next set of lights on the left hand side.

They stock everything.

Thanks all, especially John....I'll check that out when I get into CM later this week. Even rusty, it'll be able to do what I need doing. pg

Not so sure about that - last time I had rusty (several decades ago) it turned to dust in my hand. Totally useless.

Thai's throwing out something metal when they can sell it - I don't think so.

I bought fine steel wool years ago for a laboratory project. Didn't use much, and I found the best way to store this was in water! yup - water. but with some car radiator anti rust added. Just rinse out the piece you're going to use and do the job.
