'Nightmare over,' Palmyra to be mostly restored by end of 2016

DAMASCUS: -- “The nightmare is over for Palmyra,” says Syria’s Head of Antiquities.

Mamoun Abdulkarim said the city of ancient temples will be mostly restored by the end of 2016,

“We expected the worst because of the liberation fighting but I think the nightmare is over. The panoramic picture of Palmyra is fine,” said Abdulkarim.

The government will take “precautionary measures in order not to let Palmyra fall again,” he added.

Government troops, assisted by several other nations,” recaptured the site from the ISIL militant group” at the weekend (March 26-27).

It had seized the city in 2015, blowing up and heavily damaging a number of temples and other relics.

Losing Palmyra is one of ISIL’s biggest setbacks since 2014, when it declared a caliphate across large parts of Syria and Iraq.

UNESCO described the site as the crossroads of several civilisations and said it was one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world.

Not when that interferes with their prime directive of running interference for Islamo-fascists. The same applies to all minority groups within the progressive reservation.

The job of restoring Palmyra would of course have been unnecessary if world leaders had been prepared to put boots on the ground quickly to nip ISIS in the bud, alas progressives were no doubt looking for ISIS moderates to negotiate with.

Yes Enoon you are quite correct. It is so very confusing, the modern socialists act like they are pro gay and womens rights. But they are also obsessed with flooding the countries with young muslim males who when you consider their form are not exactly pro womens rights. The "new" culture/fashion of stone-age sharia compliance is replacing the old one of democratic tolerance.

With the right restoration it could be fixed. Take Epphesus in Turkey. It looks great now but used to be just rubble. I doubt it would be as fast as they are saying however.

Went there in 1999. Probably one of my favourite places in Syria. Incredibly friendly and genuinely hospitiable people. Awful that they've had to live through this occupation.
