PHUKET: -- All 19 tsunami-warning towers in Phuket will undergo a live test at 1:30pm tomorrow (Wednesday, Mar 30), but instead of the multi-language tsunami warning and siren, the towers will play the national anthem.

The news came as officials began a two-day annual emergency drill in Phuket Town today (Mar 29).

The exercise is a collaborative effort by Phuket Provincial Office, Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), Phuket City Municipality and the Royal Phuket City Hotel.

The simulated emergency response and disaster-management drill is based on the scenario of an 8.3-magnitude earthquake striking south of the Nicobar Islands – specifically at Latitude 6.23885 and Longitude 94.59228 – at a depth of 30 kilometres.

According to the simulation brief, the underwater earthquake creates a tsunami and building collapse at Royal Phuket City Hotel in Phuket Town.

So they will play the national anthem instead of multi- language warning.

What ever possessed them to think of that?

So when there is a genuine warning people will be standing at attention waiting for the anthem instead of running.

Sometimes they do things, without first thinking them through,

sirens must be a World wide symbol of an emergency, but not

in Thailand.

This is the Thai way, doing things without thinking and retracting them after the first complaints !!!

Rational thinking is not taught in Thai schools !!!

Regards.

They don't want to cause panic for an exercise, so they they play the national anthem. A real warning will play the multi language warning ....

The first non-idiotic comment on this thread. As much as things around here seem stupid many times, the majority of TV posters seem to fit right in.

They could have tried 'This is a test, do not panic'' slowly and clearly a few times in English and Thai before testing the alarm proper, but it is the same old silly story; some stuffed shirt somewhere is trying for his 'Thaier than Thai' brownie points with an eye on any coming (fat chance) elections.....

I heard nothing here in Kamala (about 150 meters from the beach)

I heard nothing here in Kata, and I am within audio range of the tower.

5 towers not work ---> http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket-news/Tsunami-towers-popular-Phuket-beaches-fail-sound/63570#ad-image-0

I contacted the company in Bangkok that is in charge of maintaining the towers immediately after we discovered that they werent working, said Mr Trakul.
