ADB Sees Slower But Gradual Growth for Thailand

Mandaluyong, Philippines: -- A slowing Chinese economy and a sluggish recovery in major industrial economies are expected slow down economic growth in Thailand’s by as much as half a percentage point, says the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in a report published Wednesday.

In its 2016 Outlook report, the ADB said the region will experience a slow down in growth this year. It revised its previous projections for the region to 5.7%.

Weaker exports, a tightening labor market and supply-side reforms have drastically altered China’s economy toward more domestic consumption and a significantly bigger reduction in industrial capacity, the ADB noted.

China Slowdown to Hit Thailand Hard
BY SHRUTI B

BANGKOK: -- A recent Asian Development Bank report has revealed that the slow economic recovery of major nations and the slow growth of China would not be good for the economic development of Thailand. These two factors could cut the Thai growth by about half percentage point. The report was released on Wednesday.

The Asian Development Outlook 2016 also stated that the Asian region growth for 2016 would only be about 5.7 percent in the years 2016 and 2017.

The report also has some positives for Thailand. It states that Thailand’s economic recovery would be backed by public investment and it would improve a lot in the next two years.

It states that Thailands economic recovery would be backed by public investment and it would improve a lot in the next two years."

The statement is not based on facts. Public investors are reluctant to invest while the country is under the control of an extremist military government who control the courts etc. As for the next two years, I would suspect the state will be begging from the World bank again.

The ADB is being diplomatic about the Thai economy, the weakest of the ASEAN nations.

Thailand will be fortunate if it can just match the 2015 growth rate of 2.8% for 2016 and 2017. But more likely it will see 2.5% or less for 2016 and 2017.

The World Bank recently projected Thailand’s growth to contract from 2015 to just 2.0% growth in 2016.

Somkid recently promised South Korean business men that the Thai economy expand by 3-3.5% year on year for 2016 in an effort to attract foreign investment. If he proves wrong, he will have harmed the reputation of the Junta-led government and should resign. wai2.gif

chitty chitty chit chat,

A mixture of hyperbole and wishful thinking?

And ignoring reality, but that's a given.
