Is that a tunnel they are making on Soi Siam?

As anyone who uses it will know there's roadworks happening on Soi Siam just around the big market. Yesterday I noticed a massive hole where the road is diverted, as though a tunnel was being built there. Anyone know what's happening there?

Part of the government incentive in preparing for the rainy season?

Is that supposed to be helpful, or funny?

Up to you.

But I reckon it's part of the extensive new drainage system that has been going on all over the darkside from Nong Ket up near Highway 36, to Toongklom Talman. However, when you look at current google earth imagery (dated February 2016) it's hard to see where anything is draining to/from but possibly it was a major creek bed before the urban sprawl backfilled everything?

My bad, you get so many smart arse replies on this forum, I thought yours was just another. The hole is massive, easily 10 metres deep, but I guess for drainage purposes, maybe it has to be.

I really don't know how to put this Giddyup, but there is absolutely no reason to build or bypass anything on SSCC via a tunnel.

And if anyone was going to build a tunnel for traffic (of any sort), you certainly wouldn't start by just digging a deep hole.

I have passed the roadworks you mention, and although I'm not sure exactly why they're digging such a deep hole I'd hazard a guess it's related to drainage / water movement.

The only reason I suggested a tunnel was because of the depth. You are correct, there is no obvious reason to build a tunnel there, but logic doesn't always enter into the equation in Thailand.

It is definitely to do with water. Either the supply system or drainage. Travel past it regularly and it is just another obstacle to getting into Pattaya from the darkside. Mind you, you need to watch that little diversion after heavy rainfall. Best to take the longer detour.

Thought this was an April 1 post when I first saw it this morning.

I haven't been involved in this thread, but I want to add a strong "Thank you" to adjethai65 for posting this detailed, official answer to the original inquiry. I wish we had more Thai people posting on such questions when they have the official government information available to them. Most of us falangs are posting things based upon rumors or guesses. For me, it really eases frustration when I know the real facts.

Thanks, again, adjethai65!

Agreed. I knew it had something big to do with the water. There is also major water pipe installation all along SSCC road, as no doubt you know.

No No No Where have you guys been? This big hole has been going on for over a year and it is planned to be finished in another 2 or 3 years! Prior to that it was mentioned and a number of study was done to see if it was necessary. But anyone that know anything about Thailand especially Pattaya they are going to do it anyways.

This is a tunnel, the plan is for the traffic to go under just before Siam and come out after they pass Pattaya Klang which is why they are building the tunnel. They feel the traffic is too congested at this Intersection. The problem is when it rains the water been running into the tunnel delaying work. As you are heading south just be Siam, it continues to flood both sides since there aren't enough drain pipes and they forgot that water does not drain uphill!

The plan is if it works since they have diverted all the traffic down to Pattaya Tai, the congestion will be there so they most likely will start digging a new tunnel before that and after they finish that tunnel since they diverted the traffic to Theppasit will then have to build a tunnel before then!,

Either a wind-up or he's got his tunnels mixed up. 1

The OP is talking about the deep culvert being dug in Soi Siam Country Club near the market.

You are talking about the Sukhumvit tunnel.

Not same same.

Sorry my bag guys! Stupid me as you are thinking I deserve it!

That big F--- hole?

All the rain water running into the area along with a broken water pipe for months and months undermined the road in this area. They dug it up and realized there was a stream running under it. So they are trying to re-enforce underneath the walls of the road. This also happened just outside of another market in the area. Near the bottom of Nernpludwan there is a big road on the right that leads all the way up to the Pattani International school. Right in front of the Market they found the same thing avoid using this road because further up they have been trying to put drains in for near a year the road is a mess a mud trap.

Sorry guys as noted need some reading glasses got my tunnels all mix up, but this isn't a tunnel it is a sink hole?

Per my comment in post #4,

But I reckon it's part of the extensive new drainage system that has been going on all over the darkside from Nong Ket up near Highway 36, to Toongklom Talman.

The "big road on the right that leads all the way up to the Pattani International school" is the one in bold font and was supposed to have been completed on 6th march according to an article in a local rag. You are probably right in both cases where major, natural watercourses has been gradually impinged on through unregulated development and lack of planning. Typically the local method of flood management is to build up the road and drainage effectively moving everything on a new level and rendering adjacent ground floor shops and houses uninhabitable. It would appear that these subterranean streams or more likely, larger areas of poorly consolidated land and sink holes just can't be built on so they are doing the novel thing of addressing the issue where it naturally lies. It will take them years to win that pissing contest.

Just for the sake of identification, the "big road on the right off of Nernplubwarn" is Patanakarn Road. Runs all the way to the road that connects with Soi's 85 and 89; which lead west to Sukhumvit. They have begun to lay concrete on the south half. But it will likely be at least a couple of months before it's finished. Likely to slow as the rains increase.

Great observation and thanks for the name of the road. I use to take this road to get to the Indoor stadium. I understand the need to do the work and I do not blame the workers at all. One day, I decided how bad could it be so said to myself give it a try? Bad mistake, at the market they had a sign in Thai, directed you to the right but no sign thereafter telling you to go around back to the road. So you end up circling around a empty lot. Once you figure it out from others ended back onto the road where the construction continue. Further up now another sign telling you to go left up a make shift new dirt road. As you continue no other sign as to where to go. Even the local Thais on their bike had no idea all we did was circle around a open area going here and there. I was with a bunch of others Thais on our bikes ended up going up a path to a Thai guy house? From my little Thai, I could understand his frustration that people are ending up at the front of the house. I heard him mentioned something jokingly about selling Leo on his front porch. Anyway you actually needed to go up this backroad to the back of the Pattani school to get back to the road. You come out right at the temple.

This road one needs more than a off road vehicle I feel sorry for the people who own shops or homes. You look at the drains many are over a foot over the purpose surface once the cement is laid. Like when they repaved Nernpludwan, after the surface is laid they come back and redo the drains to conform to the road surface, then come back and put little sidewalks. There is a small road off Soi 47, Chill Bar that leads to Sukhumvit, they dug up the road and found a giant electrical unit underground. This road was dug up and then left for a near year before they ever came back?

An underground pump station, sounds interesting.

But I wonder why they are building it slap bang in the middle of the road, not a few meters to the side in the vacant land, they are currently directing all the traffic through.

But what do I know,

Posted

Don't know what it's for but my wife tells me the sign says it's going to go on for 3 years!

That,s it then.............it is the planned underground bus park for the Chinese tour buses clap2.gif

p.s. sightseeing tours of the underground by pass on nearby Sukhumvit road are being sold at present to the Chinese tourists, thus the need for ample bus parking nearby thumbsup.gif

sorry giddyup if this offends cheesy.gif
