A police officer looks at a printed copy of a Facebook post which upset members of the Territorial Defense Volunteer Corps, many of which rallied to file a defamation charge against the anonymous poster Friday in Yala province.

YALA — More than 100 members of a paramilitary force in the southern border province of Yala filed a libel charge against a Facebooker today for allegedly insulting their service.

They said Facebook user Sating Banrao defamed the Territorial Defense Volunteer Corps by calling them stupid, arrogant and so incompetent they were easy targets for separatist militants in the region.

"calling them stupid, arrogant and so incompetent they were easy targets for separatist militants in the region."

Facebook people don't really give a darn but now they have become nationwide news with the public openly wondering if the allegations are indeed true. Are they simply non trained volunteers, wandering around like girl guides perhaps? Brownie anyone?

How embarassing, a group of sissy soldiers. Is the soldier on the right crying?

These men are paramilitary, not regular trained Thai troops. They are essentially civilian contractors drawn from Southern localities.

One component of the strategy governing the Thung Yang Daeng Model is to slowly phase out regular Army patrols and replace them with Paramilitary Rangers, preferably hired locally so they know the terrain. They are paid typically about Bt15,000 a month.

This whole thing is getting ridiculous.

It seems every time someone expresses an opinion they get hit with a defamation lawsuit. Then they can turn around and file one back. And then...and then...etc, etc.

It's turning into an endless cycle of an endless game...and the country sorely needs a collective reality check (or maybe a 'crackdown'?) on this nonsense.

ps...Charges will be filed on anyone who disagrees.

The truth hurts. cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

But seriously, defamation charges over a FACEBOOK post? Could these guys be more pathetic. Plus they are actually living up to the truth of the facebook post they are upset about.

You really could not make this sh!t up if you tried.

So, to prove the "Facebooker" wrong...they arrogantly file a stupid charge...while getting their pictures taken so terrorists can easily identify them...

Have any of your armchair commenters been to the deep south of Thailand?

Have any of you read about how many people there have been murderred?

Have any of you talked with the police or even any of the military that have

had to go there to work and live there for a period of time. That part of the

country is not very safe to be at for almost anyone who is not from there,

and it is even unsafe for people who are from there. This news story may seem

a bit silly, but I do feel for anyone who had to be part of the authority in

that area of Thailand. I think the stress of just bering there is high enough, that

the people who have to go after the insurgents in the area, or the rebels, or

what ever else they are called is something that I for sure would not have

to live with every day. One suggestion is maybe some of you could

go volengteer there and see the situation for your selves. Great Idea Right!

I have talked to several people during the last few years, and they all were very

thankful that they did their time in the souht and got back to a more friendly

part of Thailand alive. Most of them said that they had no desire to go back

if it is at all possible. Just saying!

Geezer

So why don't the real Army deal with the problems in the South and leave these guys to Take care of the farms... It's quite sad that a country with such a big armed forces has to rely on basically volunteers to sort out something that's been going on so long !

What a ridiculous post. When I was in the army, if I, or anyone else in my unit had suggested filing defamation charges for being criticised, we'd have been laughed out of the NAAFI.

Big girls' blouses.

I hear what you say but maybe the problem lays in the RTA MO for that area, and yes before you say anything i have seen conflicts and troubles but a change in their operations and a secured coms system would sort out a lot of the problem. plus better training in CRW and hearts and minds
