BANGKOK:-- Police have ruled out murder in the case of the "Central Asian" man found dumped in a bag in a Bangkok canal.

Authorities intimated that they know the nationality of the man but are not saying for fear of damaging relations with the country concerned. Marks found on the body are now believed to be the result of animals nibbling on the corpse.

The man is now confirmed dead after one of several dozens of condoms containing amphetamine split in his stomach. He is believed to be a drug mule who was going to take the drugs concealed in his body to another country.

The body was found in the Ong Ang canal earlier this week in the Phranakorn area of Bangkok near the Samranrat intersection.

In other developments police believe that the body was dumped in the water within one kilometre of where it was found and the police have announced foreigners living in the area will be investigated as the investigation widens.

Acting police chief Sanit Mahathaworn said before a high level meeting on the case: "Death was due to the burst drugs inside the man. People have been carrying drugs like this for decades and occasionally this happens. When we find out who he is that will lead us to his associates and the entry point in the klong which in turn will give us clues from the CCTV at that point."

After the three hour meeting Sanit added: "This is a complex case. Fingerprints of the victim have been examined but we do not want to announce his nationality because it might affect international relations adversely. Suffice to say that he is from 'central Asia.'"

The 'Bodium' brand bag containing the body was made in Thailand and police say they have tracked down the seller who said two men bought it. Sketches of the men are soon to be distributed to the media.

Water flow in the area was examined and a spokesman said that it was not going fast leading investigators to believe that the bag was dropped in the klong at one of three or four spots in a one kilometre radius.

Marks found on the trunk, arms and neck are not of human origin or made with a sharp object, investigators now confirm. They are believed to have been made after death by animals gnawing on the corpse.

Fingerprints of foreigners who arrived in the last three or four days are being compared to the dead man's and police are also interested in potential friends of the man who arrived around the same time. They have not said why they know his nationality but do not know exactly who he is at this moment.

They suspect that the gang involved is larger than the two men who are believed to have bought the bag and the victim himself.

The are positive no Thais are involved? hmmm....so one would hope that only foreigners in the area that are of his nationality will be investigated. And how to they intend to find such people? Not all hotels report their presence...and what if they are long termers? They would't have just arrived either.

Original report said he was battered rotten...which would seem right..when stuffed in a bag then thrown in the canal....now we get the usual Thai BIB guff...it was ànimàls gnawing at him...OK ....if he had been lying outside in the open...how the duck do animals gnaw on him,if he is inside a bag in the water???? Gee, you almost had it. Just imagine, he may have been gnawed-on/battered before being put in the bag.

I do hope that the BIB can inform the public which brand of condom it was that split open.
