THE HAGUE: -- Last week’s shock acquittal of Serbian ultra-nationalist politician Vojislav Seselj is to be appealed by prosecutors at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

The Hague court cleared him of war crimes and crimes against humanity over the Balkan wars of the 1990s.

Serge Brammertz, chief prosecutor, said judges had ignored a large body of evidence when they freed Seselj, who was accused of stoking murderous ethnic hatred with fiery rhetoric against Bosnian Muslims and Croats.

Seselj, whose Serbian Radical party is likely to return to parliament later this month, said he was not worried about the appeal.

'They have no legal grounds,' he told Reuters by telephone.
