Question: What do you get when you put a big Thai crowd together and throw in some cut price designer shoes?

Answer: Mayhem!

In a scene surely a precursor for the excesses to come at Songkran next week a huge battle ensues as a heaving mass of shoppers at Central Ladprao fight tooth and nail for a chance to buy Converse shoes.

It is every man and woman for themselves as a clip on Youtube entitled "Zombie gang vs Half Price Shoes" went viral with 400,000 netizens clicking for a look at the buying battle. It is under the name 'Panorama Thailand.'

Comments compared the Thais' behaviour as every bit as appalling as the notorious "feeding frenzy" of Chinese tourists overloading on prawns at a King Power buffett recently.

Others put the blame squarely on the department store for not having a proper system and not limiting purchases to one pair per person.

The stampede to the northern Bangkok shopping mall was instigated when a Twitter user posted about the cheap shoes leading to multiple shares.

Central responded quickly; Piyawan Lilasomphop of the Thailand wide group said that the store had now installed a queuing system.

What an idiots, they even don't see the size.

One day in the mall there was a huge crowd grabbing for clothes, a girl with a microphone was encouraging them and they went beserk.

I looked why it was, Camel Active for 50% discount...That happens 4 times a year! and then nobody cares at all. But if there's a girl with a microphone and it's next to the escalators they all want to have it.

Thats because they arent buying for themselves but to sell for a markup later. Happens to h&m exclusive designer lines too. People have devolved into jerks

No wonder we have a cab company called GRAB....says it all.

Now imagine if there is a water or food shortage or some sort of financial collapse, I think a few might reconsider how long is safe to stay here if they go nuts like this just for a pair of cheap shoes... amazing... whistling.gifwai2.gifrolleyes.gif

I agree and considering the amount of guns in this country we better leave for a while.

Did you see that man in the yellow shirt in the other movie about japanese icecreams?

I didn't check the price but they also sell those converse shoes at the outlet-square at Impact muang thong where busloads of chinese go shopping, they have good manners there though.

If Central goes to Europe they will learn a hard lesson i guess. Departmentstores there have a hard time because of cheap internetshops who are much cheaper then Central in Thailand.

No matter how much these shoes cost after 50% discount i bet i can find them cheaper in Europe.

These folks just have nothing to do and want to make a picture for Fayboo. The shoes will be black in a week after walking on the BKK pavements full of filth.

People often hate those that show the same characteristics of which they know they have themselves.

The anti-Chinese stories shock me in as much as they could just as easily be Thai. Loud in public places, litter louts, disrespectful, jump queues..... Thainese.

This shows exactly how they behave when they see something they want also.

As for the shrimp video, has anyone seen how Thais behave when seafood is presented in all you can eat buffets? Plates stacked as high as they can be without giving a stuff for anyone else.

This stuff is pathetic. They're using other countries to try and cover up their own bad manners.

I usually don't ditch out the " it happens all over the world" but in this case it is appropriate. Thais are no more worse than Chinese, Americans, Germans, Scandinavians or whoever when it comes to frenzy. It just has to be a product and a price worth "fighting" for.

However I am a bit surprised that in Thailand it is Converse and Japanese ice cream that make people go nuts.

Would there be mayhem on Walking Street if the bars and girls announced a 50% discount on ... errr, you know what (not allowed to say)? How many TV members would storm the place, condoms and viagra in hand?

Not many. A buy one get two more free promotion.........?

My Grandmother was an artist. Quite accomplished. She painted an abstract series in the 40's one of the paintings was titled Sales Day or something like that and it depicted a sales day at Macys San Francisco......it terrified me as a child. I had nightmares about going downtown with my Mom.......
