Although i still have 18 months to run on my current passport i thought it would be easier to apply for a new one while i'm in the UK rather than having to apply for a new one in Thailand in a years time.

In the application process they state that i have to send in my current passport so i take it they will somehow cancel my existing passport.

So will using the new passport cause a problem on entering Thailand and what do i do on changing over my existing Visa and Visa extension ?

I paid extra for the 4 hour service last July. Booked an appointment by telephone.

Entering Thailand I showed both old and new passports, as old one had valid visa in it.

When applying for retirement extension, I had to show both passports.

For transferring an existing extension I have read on here that a letter is needed from the

British Embassy.

They will return your old passport after canceling it. The visas in the old passport remain valid and are not transferred to the new passport. You show both passports on entry. If you have an existing permission to stay in Thailand, that stamp will be transferred to the new passport after your return. If they do it at the airport, no Embassy letter is needed.

Not sure that the airport will transfer his stamps, Tim - he may well need to go to his immigration office for this to be done.

Details as to how to go about obtaining the Embassy letter if he needs one:

He may, however, need to email the Embassy for the blank pro-forma.

He may also need to complete the Transfer Stamp to a New Passport Form downloadable from the Immigration Bureau website:

I had to get a new UK passport via Hong Kong some years ago when they stopped issuing them here.

At the time and I assume it still is, illegal to be without your passport.

I carried a copy of mine, all pages, and the receipt for postage to Hong Kong in case I was stopped.

Normally I traveled around Thailand with a company driver, for the period my passport was away I felt it prudent to stay in Bangkok.

What is the situation now ? Will a copy suffice ( perhaps certified ) or is their some form of letter available from the UK Embassy ?

As a separate / perhaps related issue as it concern the postal service - today when wanting to send something by EMS to the UK I had to show the Post Office counter my passport - details were taken. I understand this is also the same when sending by EMS to Bangkok. I am told by the PO that this is a govt regulation. Could this affect sending and receiving ones passport ?

You can only apply for your passport in Bangkok now. You keep your old one until you receive the new one. See: https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

If applying for a new British Passport from within Thailand there is no need to send your passport anywhere. Application is made using copies of all the passport pages.

Very helpful information thanks.

Seems things have changed since Hong Kong. Thanks to those who updated current requirements. Maybe all change again if the Embassy / Consul shut down ( sold off ).

The Embassy/Consul does not deal with passport application.

The debate about the Embassy/Consulate is one that concerns the land/buildings NOT the continued provision of Diplomatic/Consular services.
