Uighur, Chechen Militants in Thailand to Stage Attacks, Memo Warns

Featured Replies

Don't worry people the new overstay bans ensures that there are no bad guys in Thailand and the 90 day reporting means they find where they live. Immigration promised us that's why they needed these laws, we are all safe now

And how much notice will the powers that be take of this 'Memo' ? None whatsoever would be my guess as this country is strictly reactive and rarely proactive unless it's a case or two of 90 day overstay's. After the bombs have gone off it will be clear up quick, destroy all the evidence and deny any terrorist activity ever occurred. The very next day we will be informed that such things do not affect tourism; indeed, more visitors are arriving every day than ever before !

You are right and so should go to live in a major European city where a 100% guarantee of "security" is provided by the Authorities.

I don't know the specifics of the relationship between the Chechens and the Uighurs, but there are significant number of both of these groups in Turkey. During the Chechen war, many Chechens fled to Turkey. There was a fair amount of support, especially from Islamic groups, for the Chechens and their cause. There has been support for Uighurs who are considered to be an ethnically Turkish group. How these two groups have joined up and formed some sort of alliance, I don't understand.

Without knowing the relationship, it is hard to know what the target is. Chechens might target Russian interests, but Uighurs probably wouldn't. Uighurs might target Chinese, but would have little beef against Russia.

If the basis of this affiliation is purely religious, then pretty much anyone and anywhere could be the target.

It would be better if there was a little more background information about the nature of this group and what they might be up to.

What complete nonsense. European security forces repeatedly said that an attack was very likely. The difference in the two, aside from the glaringly obvious quality difference in day to day European policing when put next to the Thai equivalent, was the efficiency and transparency of the responses to the attacks.

And the fact that the arrested suspects were brought before civilian courts for processing, not globally derided kangaroo military "courts".

So this Songkran, look at everyone, everywhere, and at everything. Lest you get caught up in a blast zone. They kind of forget to mention this.

I can't understand why Chechens would be involved in this inside Thailand

Plenty of soft Russian targets in Pattaya and Phuket.

Are you referring to their midsection?

So now Thailand has its own terrorism. That's a great excuse to take away more of the people's freedom. They must be learning from the westclap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gif

No, i am somewhat living in a "glass house" in that department. I was more thinking about the Ambassador hotel.

Always a good idea to take terrorist threats or warnings seriously. Remember this threat in 2014.

Hezbollah terror plot against Israeli tourists in Bangkok foiled

The investigation into two alleged Hezbollah terrorists arrested in Thailand recently was progressing swiftly, the Bangkok Post reported Thursday, as one of the suspects reportedly admitted to a planned attack on Israeli tourists in Bangkok’s popular Khao San Road tourist hub. There are several Israeli travel agencies and other establishments in the area, along with a Chabad house.

The men have been identified as French-Lebanese national Daoud Farhat and Lebanese-Filipino national Youssef Ayad. Both suspects reportedly arrived several days before the beginning of Thailand’s Songkran festival on April 13.

Thailand’s deputy national police chief, Winai Thongsong, said the men were arrested at different locations in Bangkok after Thai police received intelligence from Israel about a planned attack on Israeli tourists during Passover.

A Thai source said investigators believe at least nine suspected foreign terrorists connected to Hezbollah are somewhere in Thailand. Authorities are attempting to track them down, the source said.

I thoug that the government said awhile ago that there were no terrorists in Thailand????????

I was in Bangkok yesterday and haven't been there for a few months. They seem to be checking people's bags at the BTS entries and exists, I must say though I could have easily had one in my rucksack below the clothes that were at the top that they saw. A terrorist attack by Daesh in Thailand is way too easily done and I am surprised it has not happened yet.

Latest on the Uighurs movements.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department has not received any information regarding two Turkish men of Uighur ethnicity suspected of plotting terrorist attacks in Thailand entering the country, after they fled Thailand at the end of March.

Its director-general Datuk Sakib Kusmi said the department was always on the alert and would have detected them if they had entered via any checkpoints, but there were no traces so far.

“However, if the two men came in through an ungazetted route, it would require the cooperation of the relevant security agencies to detect their presence,” he told Bernama here, today.

Academician wants Thai government to probe Daesh cell existence

BANGKOK, March 7 — An expert on Thailand’s Muslim and southern province affairs has cautioned the government not to totally dismiss a former Thai prime minister’s allegation on the existence of Daesh militant group cells operating in the volatile south, known as the ‘Black Swan’.

Professor Jaran Maluleem wants high-ranking security officials, especially, to take heed to former premier Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh’s explosive allegation.

Chavalit, being a former armed forces supreme commander, defence and interior affairs minister, certainly had the knowledge and intelligence to talk on the issue, he said.

Police on High Alert in Thailand over Suspected “Terror Attack” as Songkran Approaches

Thailand’s Chief of Police Chakthip Chaijinda said the warning was real, but called for calm

.

BANGKOK – As Songkran approaches next week in Thailand, police are on high alert according to a leaked memo issued by Surat Thani’s governor to local police, warning that four Uighur and Chechen militants could be planning terrorist attacks on foreigners in the kingdom.

According to local news website Khaosod English, the warning originally came from Thailand’s intelligence information agency and was passed on by the governor of Surat Thani province to local police.

It warned that two Uighur men had entered Thailand via Phuket on March 23 and “may stage attacks on Chinese targets and interests in South-East Asia”, said Khaosod.

The two Chechens, meanwhile, were allegedly planning to attack Russians in Thailand.

The memo said attacks could also take place in the tourist hot spots of Phuket and Samui islands and urged police to step up security in crowded locations.

Thailand’s Chief of Police Chakthip Chaijinda said the warning was real, but called for calm.

Police were checking if the suspects – who entered Thailand via regular channels – were still in the country or had left.

“I have been proceeding with this matter in secret for a week now,” he was quoted by Khaosod as saying. “Right now, we still don’t know the intention of their entry into the country. We believe they aren’t here with good intentions.”

He assured reporters that Thai security agencies were doing their utmost to guard against attacks.
