Two men were charged on Saturday with murdering a teenager and injuring two others during a bungled vehicle theft last November, as well as committing numerous other armed robberies around Kampot province.

Four teenagers were on their way home from a concert at a pagoda in Damnaktrab Khang Cheng village, Krang Snay commune, about midnight on November 14 when they were attacked by two men armed with an AK-47. The robbers demanded they stop and hand over their Honda Dream motorbike, but the teens accelerated past them, hoping to escape.

The robbers fired the AK-47 at them and bullets passed through three of the bike’s passengers, killing one of them instantly. Though injured, the other teenagers were able to stay on the bike until they reached a nearby house and called police.

By the time police arrived at the scene the killers had fled. The provincial Ministry of Interior office and the non-profit Child Protection Unit (CPU) formed Task Force Whiskey to search for them and after months of searching, on April 4, 53-year-old Muong Ret and 40-year-old Uk Moeun were arrested in connection with a series of other robberies in Kampot.

At first, the police did not know about the men’s connection to the November murder, but after questioning it became clear that they were guilty of that crime as well. Witnesses identified the two men as the attackers and they each confessed shortly afterward.
