CHIANG MAI: -- Just so you know, Thai police regard nipples of all genders equally obscene.

A young foreign man was arrested in the middle of a water fight in Chiang Mai province today on a charge of obscenity after police saw him walking around shirtless.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was charged with public obscenity “by exposing himself to the public,” according to traffic officer Pol. Col. Piyapan Pattarapongsin.

Let me see if I've got this right. The guy is charged with being "obscene" by merit of not wearing a shirt. Certainly, for any normal-thinking cops, priority would be given to cladding such an offensive sight as quickly as possible, but instead, they choose to give the press a photo op and actually become responsible for spreading this "obscene and offensive" image nationwide. After many years here, I still can't really get my head around Thai logic.

When you understand Thai logic it is time to leave!!

I don't care about his bare chest. I do think, however, he should have been fined for that profoundly stupid hairstyle and looking like a seedy scumbag. How does one get a hairstyle like that? No idea what the fuss is about. This rule applies in many countries, Spain about 25 years ago I seem to remember my friend getting pulled up for this despite me warning him about the risk. I remember having a bit of a row with a farang about 5 years ago. He was on his m'bike worse for wear and I told him he was committing an offence, not only by having no crash helmet but also wearing no shirt. I had been told that do drive around without a shirt was insulting to the king etc.

So, there has always been an 'offence' for years. Whether it is reasonable dduring this water throwing caper I think not, unless we are now moving to everyone wearing Mao suits.!

I personally find it annoying to see shirtless foreignors walking on public streets here. It demonstrates a lack of respect and low class. It's embarrassing and I ask myself, 'what are they thinking?'

Perhaps the Thai author of the popular Thai tee shirt that says, "I didn't Like You Anyway," came up with the idea from seeing more and more disrespectful, no class, out of control foreigners.

It's no wonder visa changes and policy procedures are being made and enforced.

People act the way they dress. When I see a 60 year old shirtless man holding hands walking down Sukhumvit with what appears to be a 18 year old woman I and most naturally form negative opinions. My opinion and most would change their opinion if he was dressed appropriately.

I doubt very much that this fine will be on the books.You rekon he went to court dressed like that,you rekon he got a receipt.
