CHANTABURI: -- Scuffles broke out as angry relatives attempted to attack a youth arrested in connection with the death of a volunteer policeman.

The 19 year old suspect in a bullet proof vest had to be hurriedly taken away by a large police guard after he prayed for forgiveness in front of the corpse of the policeman at a temple in Chantaburi yesterday, Daily News reports.

Thanapon Tripol, just 17, was shot dead as he attempted to break up a fight behind an entertainment venue in Chantaburi. The shooter is still on the loose and may have fled across the border, say police.

Many police colleagues and a large guard joined the bathing rites at the Klong Sanam Pao temple yesterday along with the dead cop's mother and father and six year old brother. After one of the suspects in the shooting, Panuwat (or Mai) Sa-artjit, 19, had apologised in front of the coffin relatives and friends of the victim tried to get at him.

He was quickly rushed away.

Meanwhile, police are desperate to catch the shooter in the incident who they have named as Thamrongchai (or Mouth) Sa-artjit,25, and say he may have crossed over the border. They are coordinating with other forces in a neighbouring country. They said that Thamronchai has a conviction for rape and has committed a string of other offences over the years.

Nareumon Suksamran, the mother of the slain policeman, said that her son was a good guy loved by all his family. He had only wanted to be a policeman and help society and was killed before his 18th birthday that would have been this Saturday.

These shows of sorrow are a complete debacle.....bringing in murder accomplices to forcibly apologise to the deceased relatives and pay a token of bulls..t homage, is utter 19th century crap.....

Should of let the family finish the job.

We don't know what the 'suspect' did. The shooter has escaped, 'probably across the border'

Staged theatrics by the Thai police. Doomed to fail from the start. What did any sane person think would happen?

The culprit would be caught shortly because there was no yellow envelopes so far.

No end to the stupidity.

And no hi valued sports cars involved.

dude go pound sand or shut the flock up .

The shooting suspect has a prior rape conviction and is 25 years old. Wonder what the jail time was for that rape? Obviously he was out and about.

RIP to the 17 year old, of course but isn't that a bit young to be a volunteer policeman??!!! Did he have any formal training for that post?? Seems far too young to me!!

Those prefixing their comments with "dude " usually follow it with incoherent, moronic utterings. I see you've not broken the tradition.

As if the police training will do any cop good.

agree he wouldnt have the necessary maturity and experience to make or undertake correct action by himself.

that he assumed he had the necessary authority/ability probably contributed to his death

We have kids 15 and up volunteering back home. It's a nice program for them to learn what police do and take some responsibility. Usually it's traffic control rather than breaking up fights, maybe the adults were busy or he got there first and it got out of hand.

RIP to the young man, way to young to go, and he was trying to do good. Condolences to the family, this was a horrible loss.

Thai's seem to like to live their lives like their soap operas, so much angst and so much drama

I understood it to mean that he was brought to the coffin to apologize to the man he shot and ask for forgiveness of him.....I agree that it is a little late for that.....but on consideration I concluded that it might not be a bad thing at all.....if all violent offenders were made to apologize and ask for forgiveness of the person they have harmed it might at least make them more aware of the consequences of their actions and focus them of the reality of what they have done. Seems better than simply being carted off to jail and never having to deal with or come into contact with, the trauma and suffering they have caused family , friends and loved ones.

'Meanwhile, police are desperate to catch the shooter ...' Seemingly more so than they were the Red Bull brat on their doorstep.

Hi-so justice at it's best

A show put on to benefit the police. Otherwise it could have been done at 3AM when few of the relatives would of been around.

Its a shame when anybody dies in the course of their job.And i feel for the family,i truly do.And yes! he probably was a good guy.And his young life was cut short by some thug with a gun.And i agree that the family should have had a few minutes alone with the killer.

But i have to question the fact that the reason he wanted to become a policeman was to help society.sad.png

RIP policeman. In your young life, there were many things you never got to do.

Do the family have any say in this boy's attendance at the send off?

Should of let the family finish the job.

Nice avatar. Once one has read the article, you might just realise we have no idea how this 'suspect' is involved, but we do know he isn't the shooter. Hey looks like you can be a copper at 17?

Read lots of comment in the forum ...seem like lots of you guys either do not understand Asian value or has totally no respect for the country you are living in now .

Just had another rape of a child and the police stepped in. Front page Bangkok Post Breaking News. The cops should of let the locals handle this one .
