NAN: -- Eleven soldiers and police were injured as the combined force encircled a suspected target in a village in the jungle area of Nan province but was fired upon by drug traffickers.

One of the injured is Col Sethaphol Kettem, chief-of-staff of the Army’s 38th Army Area.

The colonel who led the combined force in the mission at Huey Labaoya in Village Group 10 of Tambon Sanien in Muang district of Nan province was shot on the chest.

He was later flown in Army’s C130 transport plane for immediate surgery at Phramongkutklao Hospital this morning.

Spokesman of the Nan-based Internal Security Command Operations Col Wattana Chanohaichit said this morning that the combined force led by Col Sethaphol sealed off a village in bid to arrest a drug trafficking gang yesterday.

But as the soldiers and police tried to move in a suspected house, they were fired upon by shotguns, wounding 11 of them.

The traffickers then managed to escape into the jungle surrounding the village.

All the injured were taken to Nan hospital for the treatment.

But the colonel who was seriously injured was later transferred to Bangkok this morning for immediate surgery and he is now in a safe condition.

Government troops are still hunting the fugitive drug traffickers.

Wait. A combined force of army and police encircle a village and STILL the drug gang escape? Only a week or so ago 30 drug traffickers also fled back to Laos when they were caught by a combined police and army force.

Do the army ever carry out assessments as to why these operations go so embarrassingly and dangerously wrong?

i think the intrepid nan drug runners may be a bit under estimated.

parts of nan have been 'no go' zones for many years.

i will leave it up to the lads on this forum who are experienced infantry minor tactics merchants to bide their time then comment.

it would be interesting to see the command group plans for this operation, because the imt blokes comments would be compulsory reading.

spoken by a ex military non armed corps.

Now you know why the Cambodians kick their axxes so easy at times. No cojones to do the job..

The Wehrmacht were on 'Ya ba' in a few WW2 campaigns.

So much for the image of stoner drug dealers.

They handed the pros their arse, without training in COIN or jungle warfare, and less firepower.

Still convinced drugs m'bad?

Science and history says, wake up world.

The whole 'never been conquered/colonised' is a myth.

They waved the japs in after 3 days skirmishing (we should have punished them for that after the war!) 'Invitation' was their only choice -the Japs would have wiped them out in a week.

The now maligned Burmese, were once a local superpower. They owned the little strutting bantams more than once, and stuck around for a few centuries to extract the spoils.

Or maybe other peoples history is just a drug induced dream...

They'll be swapping them for Purple Hearts.

Is this level of competence surprising? No

Is it surprising that they allow this news story to get out with apparently no sense of shame or embarrassment? Yes, amazing. Does no-one feel there might be loss of face here somewhere?

The Nan area has a coloured past and it seems the reputation still exists.

When I visited there several years ago, it seemed that the locals had a

different attitude about a few things, that other places in Thailand have

different view of. I missed out on buying a few silver products, for a

pretty cheap price for the good quality of the belts and pots.

I guess the Thai police and soldiers have to get a more serious attitude

about dealing with drug houses, and operations. Come on, it is the 21 century,

and Thailand has had issues in this field for quite a long time.

It is a shame that some people were injured in their operation.

Geezer

The worst, or best, outcome would be all the drug runners are killed in the fire fight......but there wasn't a fire fight by the look of it!

Nah, you're wrong. There WAS fire but no fight! Something about a paper bag comes to mind. gigglem.gif

Oops sorry, I've just got to stop this realistic cynicism. sad.png
