Hi,

I am from the United States and I am married to a Thai woman. We are currently going through a divorce. I'm looking for advice from someone who has been through a similar situation.

Thanks

Well a bit more info would be needed to give good advice. Are you both working? How long have you been married? Any children? Did you have property before you got married? Where are you getting a divorce, which state? Etc,,,

Otherwise only thing I can say is ......good Luck

At its simplest you both just go to the local amphur office and sign some forms and they give you a divorce certificate. Very easy if there are no kids and no issues with property etc. No need for lawyers.

That's assuming you want to get divorced in Thailand.

It is always best to try to part as friends and an uncontested divorce at the amphur is very easy

Beware if you have children and assets though:

You state the agreements regarding custody and child support on the back of the divorce paper and whatever goes down there is legally binding. Do not trust the mother of your children to translate. Use an interpreter that you can trust

I know of one case where a westerner and his Thai wife agreed to shared custody of their children after divorce but she agreed with the court officer to write sole custody. She took the children after the divorce was entered into the amphurs computer and totally legally denied father all access after that - true story, one of the ThaiVisa members who used to post here a few years ago

Use an interpreter if you have children or assets
