Not strictly a 'Thailand travel' question, but we are travelling to BKK... gigglem.gif

We will end a Europe trip in Salzburg (where I understand the hills are alive with the sound of music), and have the choice of flying out of Munich or Vienna. Both are around the same distance time-wise from Salzburg by train, both involve one train connection, the flight schedules are similar and the choice of (Emirates) aircraft types is the same - B777 and A380 fly to both.

I am leaning toward using Vienna, only because that seems a more pleasant city to pass thru, we would have a larger proportion of the trip on a fast train - the Austrian 'Railjet' train, and the airport seems to be smaller.

But does anyone have experience of these two airports and any reason to recommend one over the other?

Cheers.

My Munich and Vienna experiences are not quite up-to-date (between 5 to 8 years ago).

Both were trouble free (Thai Airways delay from Bangkok and missed connection can not be blamed on the airport).

Munich much bigger in space than Vienna but still not crowded (Lufthansa still not interested in a real second hub, all jam packed to Frankfurt).

All flights to Dubai from Munich or Vienna were in time during the last days except one with 15 min late.

If there is good train direct to Vienna airport then opt for this.

Vienna must visit, the airport is OK.

Try Sacher torte and a visit to a Heurige (slightly out of town eateries/wineries)

Schönbrun palace and romantic streets.

Ah, I made the mistake of telling my wife this, and now she wants to stay a couple of nights in Vienna before we fly home. tongue.png

My idea of a three week Europe vacation is one week each in three cities. Khon Thai seem to prefer one day each in 21 cities, with a whirlwind bus tour to the main attractions in each city. But my wife and I manage to compromise. smile.png

'Munich or Vienna airport?' was a bit of a dumb question but thanks for all the replies - Vienna it is.

Small airport yes, but not nice. Rather cramped. Though my last transit through VIE was around 5 years ago. Munich is the only European airport voted into the world's top airport list every year.

But if you plan to stop over for a few days, then nothing speaks against Vienna. A lovely City indeed. Don't miss to visit the massive park-alike Zentralfriedhof, very impressive and so many popular people and artists have been laid to rest here. A peaceful and serene walk through Europe's history.

HA!, that's hardly a recommendation for a tourist. Canberra, the "capital" of Australia, regularly wins those types of awards, and it is the most boring shithole you'd ever have the luck to spend time in. Imagine a small city populated almost exclusively by public servants (civil servants) and their families. Bitterly cold in winter, stinking hot in summer, and very popular with flies. bah.gif

But Vienna is a def. Living most of my life in Australia, European history is remote words in school text books. To get a chance to visit it is special, and Vienna has so much history - capital of the former Austro-Hungarian empire just for starters. I could spend days just wandering about the old buildings and palaces. And it's on the Danube. That might not mean much to Europeans, but just getting a chance to dip my toe in the Danube is almost worth the plane trip. smile.png

I don't mind a Wiener Schnitzel either. wai.gif And getting the chance to confuse Americans, telling them I'm from Australia and am going to Austria on vacation, is priceless! biggrin.png

You've just described my home airport, Sydney. tongue.png It resembles a large walk-thru duty free shop with aircraft parked outside.
