Tons of dead fish were found in the protected Tonle Chhmar Lake on Saturday, according to Ministry of Agriculture officials.

The lake is a wildlife sanctuary on the edge of the Tonle Sap river in Kampong Thom’s Peam Bang commune. Eng Cheasan, the director general of Fishery Administration at the Ministry of Agriculture, investigated the case personally and boats were used to get the dead fish out of the water.

“We recorded the hauls on all the boats carrying the dead fish, and they weighed about 65 tons,” Mr. Cheasan said. He added that the cause of the deaths was believed to be a combination of the shallow water in the lake and the extreme temperatures.

“The deaths were mainly because the water is shallow. The fish were of various kinds including catfish. The weather is very hot and temperatures have reached 40 or 41 degrees, heating the shallow water. “The water now is about 1.5 meters to 2 meters at the deepest level,” Mr. Cheasan said.
