Power consumption breaks record again

BANGKOK: -- Power consumption soared to a new high Tuesday with 29,004.6 megawatts of electricity being consumed at 2.13 pm, said Egat governor Sonchai Kamnoonseth on Tuesday.

The record high figure is the fourth of this year and its exceeds the 29,000 megawatt projection due to the unusual hot weather as the mercury climbed to an average of 38.1 degree Celsius nationwide.

The last record high power consumption was registered on April 25 when 28,475.3 megawatts of electricity was used.

However Mr Sonchai predicted that the maximum power consumption this year would not surpass 29,200 megawatts but he said that a new record high figure could be set this week as weather is forecasted to heat up again during the long holidays of May Day and Coronation Day.

Egat has urged households to conserve power usage by switching off power consumption at least one hour a day from 2 pm-3 pm during March 20-May 20, set the temperature of their air conditioners at 26 degree Celsius and unplug all unused electrical appliances.

That makes an average electricity power consumption of nearly 500 Watts per Thai Head no matter where they are!

It's those massive air conditioned mega malls that Thai's love to walk around which consume as much power as a whole province each.

It's people like me that run 4 air con units in my condo with no regard to the price or others. The other guy that does this is named Naam.

It's time to introduce variable rates for power consumption.

Higher rates charged during "peak hours", lower rates for "off-peak hours".

This strategy worked wonders in North America and brown-outs became a thing of the past.

I said "it's time" but then again this is Thailand and proactive measures seem difficult to embrace here.

It'll happen sooner or later.
