A close mate of mine was on a 1-year retirement extension; unfortunately, through no fault of his own he was unable to return here before the extension expired.

He is here now on a Tourist visa; he will be leaving soon then return at the end of May, collecting another Tourist visa on arrival.

What he needs to know is, can he then travel to Savannakhet and obtain a 2 or 3 months single or multiple O Visa that he can then use to apply once again for a 1-year Retirement extension here?

Hope that this makes sense to you experts; I have always been on 1-year extensions so am of no use to him whatsoever.

Savannakhet can be difficult to get a single entry non-o for being 50 or over for retirement. Vientiane and Penang are the best places to get them.

My apologies Joe; I should have added that he is married with a Thai child. He qualifies financially for either marriage or retirement but prefers the retirement extension.

So could he apply for a single entry non-o for visiting Thai wife and child at Savannakhet?

Yes he could and he would not need to show financial proof.

That sounds good, thanks.

I have also just thought that maybe it would pay him to fly UK to Laos, obtain the non-o visa for Thailand. Cuts out the middle trip in and out of Thailand.

He could easily get the single entry non-o based upon marriage in the UK. He can get it by post or in person at the embassy. Or in person at any of the consulates.

That would make life a lot easier.

Ubonjoe,Eclipse,Johnatong; thanks very much. Now he has a few different ways to get himself sorted out.

I would think that him finding the time to obtain a visa whilst in UK would be the best bet; not sure how long he will be there.

That's interesting, Joe, thanks. I have to get a new Non-Imm 'O' to start a new Extention of Stay, Retirement, as I forgot to get a new ReEntry Stamp for a trip out last month. I had thought to go to Savannakhet but I note you advise Vientiane or Penang for retirement. When I fill in the form, I guess, from that, I should state 'Retirement' as Purpose of Visit?? Will that be acceptable in Vientiane? Therefore, what supporting docs do I need? I had thought wife's ID, Marriage Cert & House Register but that would be for Marriage.

Also, must I get a Multi-Entry Visa? I had thought a Single-Entry Visa would suffice but perhaps Immi won't accept it or something??

Another also, can my wife be my Thai Guarantor, if not, who does it have to be?

Thus, the trials of a failing memory! Thanks, in advance, for your reply.

If you are married to a Thai you could get a single entry non-o visa based upon marriage at Savannakhet or Vientiane and then do the extension based upon retirement. No need for a multiple entry visa.

You would only need your marriage certificate plus a copy, signed copies of your wife/'s house book registry and ID card.

Just check non-o visa and one entry. Purpose of visit would be to visit your wife. Your wife can be guarantor or self.

I have been told one can get a visa to enter Lao at the bridge across the river when travelling to Vientiane. Can anyone please confirm or deny that. Is it the same travelling to Savannakhet? What's the normal process these days?

Should be able to cancel that, folks, but don't if I have it Rs abt face.

I have downloaded an official Lao VoA-Form, I read there is a booth just before Immi at the Friendship Bridge where I give it in, completed, with phots, $35-US, passport & get stamped in.

Oh, question above still remains ref Savannakhet & do they have a similar booth at the bridge? Any offers, please?

You can get a Lao visa on arrival on arrival at all crossings that are for all nationalities and the crossing to Savannakhet is one of them.

Edit: You get it at the Laos side of the bridge.
