Water Dams around Pattaya?

Recommended Posts

Hi, my son is working on a flooding water project for the school. Are there any water dams close to Pattaya? When we had the big flooding in Huay Yai some time back I heard a dam had burst, I guess for the Yai river. Does anyone know where it's located? Any other dams or other relevant structures for flooding around Pattaya ? I know of the big water pumps on Beach Rd.

Many thanks for any help!

pattaya doesnt have problems with floodings except flash floods due to the area's topography. dams around pattaya have been built for water retinue, not for flood protection. the closest dam is at mabprachan reservoir

The big flood in Huay Yai was due (from what I've been able to determine) from a dam bursting way out in Bang Chang/Rayong. And then causing another one in Huay Yai to burst. The flooding was quite bad. My maid had 1.5 meters of water in her house. I had a bit less than 1M.

Central Pattaya had some really bad flooding also. But that happens on a fairly regular basis.

If you poke around on the internet, you'll find a Thai government website that shows where all the major reservoirs are located. There are many!

Thanks, would you know where in Huay Yai the 2nd dam is located? When I tracked the river on Google Maps, I came across these GPS coord, could that be the location:

12.905662, 100.991861

Craig that would mean that the water would have to run up hill from Ban Chang to Huay Yai , there was a lot of flooding in Ban Chang but that is way down stream and down hill from Huay Yai .

Those coordinates didn't work for me. I do know St. Andrew's school got a bit of flooding and our relative in Rayong had big flooding.

And every water way heading south from huay yai to kilosip/ban chang to /pala/payun etc has seen massive works in the last year.

My wife's cousin works for the big newspaper out of Rayong. He covered this story, but only in the Thai press. He got flooded out big time in Rayong. According to him, it started at a reservoir somewhere way back. I'm not sure where. Hit another, smaller one somewhere in Huay Yai, and caused that one to break. Both were the fault of bad construction.

We've got some discussions going on with the government about reimbursement. But I won't hold my breath, and even if so, it will be very small.

Not sure about up hill Lenny. That's what I would have thought also. But I do know St. Andrews got flooded before us. We were warned after they got hit. A few hours later, we got hit.

Everything I've seen has been in Thai. Not sure I'll be able to find anything in English!!

Here's who manages the system, and a map of the reservoirs.

Why not?

Looks like a water reservoir:

Zoom out and you see more water.

that's a lake at the newish waterside golf course.

there's not much water inside, not enough to cause a lot of trouble IMO, also it is very far from bang chang.

i think the reservoirs of klong yai, nong pla lhai and dok krai are the only ones who can cause water in Rayong / Ban Chang / St andrews

During the "Vamco" flood it seemed like a river was flowing parallel to the railway track after the nearby dam burst

railway linedidn't hold back the flood for long

No its not normally a river it just looked like one after the Vamco storm and subsequent bursting of nearby dam....the last panoramic photo shows the normal situation, except water levels are very low at the moment.
